I don't seem to like shrubs but I do need some.

Tell me about your favourite shrubs, I need some inspiration.

Need something which will grow to 6 or 8ft, and doesn't have yellow flowers.

I have bought a clematis which doesn't flower but doesn't die back either. So I suppose it would be a perrenial? (that sounds like perineal)

It is bushing up nicely, and growing up rather than out which is what I wanted. Couldn't tell you what it's called though. So my clitoris is perineal.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 05/05/2009 21:59

LOL, erm, I'm speechless! You need to see a doctor about that...

I was rather thinking of something which can stand up by itself, rather than needing support.

Don't even get me started on my trailing labia.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 05/05/2009 22:12

pmsl at mrsmaidamess.

I too was after some good, healthy bush advice

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 05/05/2009 22:14

Oh bloody hell what have I started???

OP posts:
MaryMotherOfCheeses · 05/05/2009 22:14

And your bad influence has rubbed off already, I mistyped pines...

On a serious note, I have a weeping pear (oh god, I really do have one, its not a naff joke)which has lovely grey green leaves and white flowers.

Its about 6 foot, is more of small tree than a shrub but I love it in my garden.

mrsmaidamess · 05/05/2009 22:18

AND the clematis is free standing, needs no support, it's that bushy

Pannacotta · 05/05/2009 22:31

I can't compete with mrsmaidamess and her bush, but how about
Choiysa Aztec Pearl
Ceanothus
Cistus
Escallonia
Myrtle
Osmanthus

None has yellow flowers, the above range from white to hot pink/purple/rich blue.

All on this link
www.scentedshrubs.com/products.php?cat=12&pg=2

What you choose also depends on aspect and soil type etc.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 05/05/2009 22:39

Pannacotta, that link is great, thank you.

Semi shade, slightly acid soil. I really don't like camelia though. And I loathe buddleia. Berberis and pyracantha are evil.

I've a fair bit of space to fill up though, and need height. Maybe I do need a small tree.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 05/05/2009 22:41

Crab apple

then you get to make jelly for me in September

mrsmaidamess · 05/05/2009 22:42

Aw god, pannacotta's gone all Percy Thrower. You've both started speaking latin.

Pannacotta · 05/05/2009 22:45

Any of the above woudl grow in slightly acid soil (speak from experience) though Ceanothus, Cistus and Myrtle like full sun.

How about a small tree underplanted with shrubs and perennials?
There is a lovely small Rowan, Sorbus vilmorinii on this link
www.bluebellnursery.com/cgi-bin/catalogue.cgi?cat=t&genus=Sorbus&initial=S

You could put Skimmia underneath, small Viburnum, Cotinus, Elder (the cut leaf types are pretty, like "Black Lace" on this link,
www.bluebellnursery.com/cgi-bin/catalogue.cgi?cat=t&genus=Sambucus&initial=S

WHat colours do you like?

mrsmaidamess · 05/05/2009 22:46
Pannacotta · 05/05/2009 22:46

SOrry bout the Latin mrsm!

Pannacotta · 05/05/2009 22:50

If you want something which looks stunning now, Exochorda is hard to beat
www.bluebellnursery.com/cgi-bin/catalogue.cgi?cat=t&genus=Sambucus&initial=S

Is a bit plain the rest of the year but you coudl grow a lovely clematis through it to flower in summer...

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 05/05/2009 22:51

Keep your crabs to yourself Bald, I'll grow the apples, YOU can make the jelly (wouldn't have a bloody clue myself!)

OP posts:
MaryMotherOfCheeses · 05/05/2009 22:52

Oooh, I didn't know Sambucus did that. I saw some at the market t'other day and I do like the leaves on it.

OP posts:
BoysAreLikeDogs · 05/05/2009 22:54

That is lovely

Pannacotta · 05/05/2009 22:55

BoysAreLikeDogs · 05/05/2009 22:56

Got that in my front border, v pretty, frothy white fleurs

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 05/05/2009 22:57

That's nice too, will it make me that skinny?

OP posts:
MaryMotherOfCheeses · 05/05/2009 22:59

I like anything except yellow tbh.

And I prefer an interesting leaf, can't stand those tiddly little uninteresting leaves. Was thinking about a curly hazel as well, as it's got some interest.

Something which is nice in autumn would be sensible, as there's a stunning lilac which really doesn't need any spring competition.

OP posts:
Pannacotta · 05/05/2009 23:05

The Rowan is good in autumn, good autumn colour plus berries.

Hydrangeas still flower into autumn, I think this one is gorgeous
