How do I work out garden aspect ie north/south facing etc? Reason I ask is I've got a camellia which has suddenly started dropping all of it's blooms and apparently they hate east facing gardens. Thanks

Where does the sun rise & set?

Generally (in UK) sun rises in the East & sets in the west

North is between west & East & south between east & west

I think, maybe

Look on google earth.

Are you sure it isn't one of those cammellias that drop flowers whilst in full bloom? I have a variety like that and pretty flowers drop off the plant rather the petals starting to go brown before they fall off.

Easiest way to check accurately is to get a compass (£10 from outdoor shops).
Camellias can suffer from frost damage, esp in East facing borders, I think it happens when there is a sharp temperature change from a cold night to a sunny morning.

Does it get momrning sun where it is?

Face the sun as it rises early in the morning and then turn your body to the right by 90 degrees and you are facing south.

I found a cheap christmas cracker compass in the bottom of daughter's toy box tonight so...if I stand next to the camellia North is at roughly 10 to 10 on the clockface. Looking straight ahead the compass is between NE and East so this is possibly East facing? Something odd is that the sun sets at 10 past 10 on the clockface which is South East on the compass, which doesn't sound right at all.

The camellia is "illumination", it might be normal for it to do this anyway like Sis's. It's in a pot and it looks fine other than dropping the blooms, no leaching of colour or buds / leaves dropping off. I 'll check the sun first thing tomorrow to see if it could be a temperature shock thing.
