Can I grow squashes in containers?

I've never had any luck growing any kind of pumpkins or squashes in the ground. Last year I got really excited because I'd lovingly looked after my butternut squash plant and fed it well, it got really long with lots of flowers on and then suddenly died.

I know they need a lot of rich compost so I thought I could try and grow this year's ones in a container filled just with compost from the wormery or compost heap. Would this work? Or could I grow them in a grobag?

We put ours one year on an old compost/manure pile and they loved it thrived.

Ah, so it probably would work then. Thanks!

I hope you can, because I've got a long row of little plant pots with seeds in waiting to sprout!

I grew pumpkins in growbags (in the garden, rented house, didn't want to dig over the lawn for veggies) one year. I had no idea how far they spread...

That's a point you'll need a lot of room for them to spread, they like to take over!!!

they also like lots of sun and lots of water and they may need some food too. last year was a terrible year for squash and pumpkins - even Bob Flowedew struggled.

I plant my butternut in an old wheelbarrow with lots of regular feeding and they trail over the edges. Last year we only got 2 butternut it was too wet for them.

They do really spread. Last year was awful for us as well. We're on clay so everything was very wet.
Growing them on the compost heap works well as someone said. You could try growing them in a container either make a pea stick wigwam so they go up, or try coiling as they grow

Ah well, if Bob Flowerdew couldn't do it, I feel a bit better.
