Brown / Green small dots on underside of Clematis leaves?

They rub off, so I assume they are some kind of insects eggs

Anyone know what they might be? whether they're dangerous for the plant and what I should do about it

some leaves the eggs are brown other a light green and I found a ladybird on one of them

Sounds like aphids - greenfly.

If you don't want to spray them with chemicals you can use a solution of washing up liquid and water. Or you can just let the ladybirds eat them.

will they ruin the leaves if I don't get rid?

knowing me I'll just take a pack of baby wipes out there - that'll be ok won't it?

yup - just took a pack of baby wipes to them .. yukky horrible squelchy crap all over my hands ... I am simply too precious to have a garden

The only thing I've seen happen is that the greenflies cluster together, and the leaves get lumpy and mis-shapen where they are (presumably) feeding on them. Nasty, horrible little buggers they are ...
