i have a raised area at the bottom of my garden measuring roughly 12' x 12', which i cleared a mass of low lying conifers from.
there is a small wall around the raised area and a cobbled path running through the middle of it. i would appreciate any ideas on what to do with it.
i have put a photo of the space as the 1st photo on my profile if anyone can be bothered to look
thought about making the tall trunks left at the side into large bird feeders, nail some feeders to it.
any suggestions gratefully received

If it gets sufficient sunlight then I think this would be perfect for a child's veg patch

Plenty of room to grow lots of stuff in there

And the path up the middle would serve as a good divider from which to weed, plant and water etc.

I think the conifers may have depleted the goodness in the soil quite a bit so the first thing you will have to do is double dig the area.

Basically this means digging down a spade's length all over and putting the soil on either side of the bed on a heap. Then dig down a spade length's more picking out stones and roots as you go. By this time you should have a thoroughly dug patch plus two big heaps of soil on either side of it (it's hard work).

Then go and buy or beg as much compost or soil-enriching material such as horse manure as you possibly can (sterilised is best from garden centre if you are planting veg as you don't want lots of weeds in it).

Mix the compost material in with the heaps of soil and replace in bed.

Leave a few weeks to settle and then rake over the earth again so that it is has a fine texture ready for planting.

Then plant loads of child friendly veg such as runner beans up poles, sunflowers, marigolds, chives, radishes, lettuces etc etc
Weed and water regularly and you are away!

All of the above is dependent on how much sun that patch gets however.

If it's not much then some shade loving plants would be better ...

Your dc are gorgeous btw!!!

Yes, thinking about this, if shady, then you could try and make it in to a wildlife haven. Pile of twigs for insects, bird boxes, hedgehog box, etc etc

Or ... construct a "secret den" for your children using wall and bits of wood and old children's tables and chairs etc ????

thankyou! what a great idea
the area gets loads of sunlight, and you are right about the soil, it will need alot of work to get it healthy, but am happy to do it.
we grow veg now, potatoes in sacks, tomatoes, cucmber, caulis, courgettes all in deep pots.

thankyou for comment about the dc, yes they are

Oh sorry!!!

didn't realise I was already preaching to the converted - wrongly assumed you were gardening novice -

tend to get a bit carried away about veg ...!!!

great you have so many helping hands!!

Countingthegreyhairs · 24/03/2009 12:33

If you already grow loads of veg then you could make it in to a cutting garden

great to have loads of cut flowers readily available for the house

loads of info here

um, er, should have guessed from your nickname - how thick is that???

looking at your picagain, as it is next to neighbour's wall - you could just devote that patch to climbing veg - make huge tunnel - two long rows of uprights on either side - with an arch of runner beans and sweet peas over the top - which would give you some cover from next door and a place for your dc to "hide" at the same time ....???

Countingthegreyhairs · 24/03/2009 12:44

having said that, I haven't had much success with sweet peas myself ...

gardeningmum05 · 24/03/2009 12:46

like your suggestion on a wildlife garden!
and it would look great if i grew some runner beans in wagwams
and if i spaced it out right, like you said, the kids could have hidey spaces..am gett ing excited just thinking about it,i really need to get out more {wink}
do you know if its too late to set some runner beans ?

Absolutely not too late - in fact musn't plant out while still risk of frost which I think in UK is around 19th May

(haven't lived in UK so long I can't remember ... the 27th seems significant date too ... perhaps some other kind Mmsnetter will remember!!)

Can plant indoors in loo rolls in the next few week sor so

Ready to plant out when all risk of frost gone ...
µ

Dashing out now but back later and good luck!

Countingthegreyhairs · 24/03/2009 12:54

Also - finally finally - very good to plant peas and beans as they put nitrogen in soil which fertilisers it in time for next year ...

gardeningmum05 · 24/03/2009 13:05

great, thankyou, will pick up some seeds after work tomorrow a big thankyou for all your help
