I have veg garden plan

Never grown anything before but on weekend I plan to dig up some grass in the garden and put up log roll border around it, then fill it in a bit more with compost (slightly raised bed iyswim) and then drag dc down to garden centre to buy veg plants to start new garden. Am thinking carrots, peppers, possibly salad leaves etc.

Good idea or bad idea? Am also planning some strawberries in a couple of largish pots I have.

I did this a couple of years ago and i love it, my best ever was cherry toms in hanging baskets they were brill, good luck and have fun, don't forget your runner beans

Oooh cherry toms thanks ds eats them by the bucketload so he'd love that. Think I may give them a 'project' each as well. Quite a largish garden and never really done much with it.

me and the kids love our garden. we have planted potatoes, onions, carrots, tomatoes and strawberries. potatoes are the easiest. we have also planted sunflowers as they grow really quickly and look great. happy gardening

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately have prior commitments I'd ignored so will have to do it next week. Plan is for carrots, peas??, peppers, strawberries in pots, spuds in big old dustbin and hopefully some tomatoes. Was even thinking of getting small plastic greenhouse I saw cheap in Tesco earlier this week.

Where are you in Wales? I wouldn't choose peppers as a first vegetable to grow - they really need a bit of heat to do well and are generally happier in a greenhouse or polytunnel.

Peas, salads and carrots definitely yes, also courgettes are ideal for a first try at gardening although you either need to buy plants in May or start them off in pots indoors. You'll probably need to slug pick a lot though or they are likely to wipe out your babies.

Tomatoes are a total waste of time outdoors here where we are in West Wales because they always get blight before fruiting. If you are somewhere drier and sunnier (ideally like East Anglia ) they are more likely to do well.

Go for things that are expensive in the shops even in season, or taste heaps better than bought. Mangetout peas are easier than traditional peas. Definitely salad leaves. Radishes are quick and easy if you like them. Why not plan a pumpkin for Halloween too?
