is there a definitive, idiot-proof guide?

i want to know also

Molesworth · 01/02/2009 16:55

Me too!

I will watch your thread with interest as we have a raised veg patch but only really manage green beans and pumpkins for carving!

I need a guide that tells me what to plant and when. (oh and when to pick, pull up etc)

SoupDragon · 01/02/2009 16:57

Potatoes work well in a dustbin apparently. Or in old car tyres stacked on top of each other (add more as you "earth up" the potatoes IIRC) Which is neither definitive nor idiot-proof but interesting I thought...

I know there is (or was) a mners who was very big on gardening/veg growing. Will try to find out who it was

I've got plenty of space for pots but do not want to dig up actual garden, and the sunniest bits are not dig-uppable anyway really

would be amazing to grown own potatoes in bins!

I have the year round Allan Titchmarsh book (not that I have read much of it.. but it DOES say, 'Ok, in jan, do this an dthat, in `Feb, do this..' I am assuming it also includes veggies, as I need to plant some too, once the ground has unfrozen.. I guess I'll try some cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, I hear blueberries produce lots of fruit, so that's an idea also. I got 10 million corgettes last year, from 1 plant, so that seems to be fairly idiot proof. I just want ones my DS's will enjoy watching grow.

I successfully grow potatoes, sstrawberries, pumpkins, squashes, courgettes, carrots, salad, aubergines, peppers ,beans and peas in containers. You plant stuff just as you would normally, but you must remember to water and feed regularly.Thats it really.

If you want a book,Dr Hessayon's 'The Container Expert',has a section on fruit & veg too.

I have loads of 'growing in pots' books but the RHS one my mum bought me is the best.

Last year, despite slug attacks, we grew salad leaves, carrots, courgettes, tomatoes (cherrya nd real) strawberries, beans. And this was the first time I had ever tried to grow anything.

Mum is buying me these this year to grow potatoes in.
