Is there a plant particularly suitable to give to my god-daughter as her christening present?

i.e. one that's called something lovely and appropriate.

A rose?

harpomarx · 08/12/2008 20:46

my mum was given a rose when I was born.... She still has it, 3 moves and many a few years later.

I hadn't actually thought of a rose . I had in my head that it would have to be a rose or something that had a particularly lovely name!

some roses here

Podrick · 09/12/2008 17:22

You can get a brand new species of rose specially bred and named after a person if you want to!

A rose would be good as it's pretty long-lived. Or how about a fruit tree or other ornamental tree?

GoodWilfToAllMN · 11/12/2008 22:22

Apple tree?

SpankyouHardOnChristmasNight · 12/12/2008 17:43

Ooooh I am now convinced both a rose and and apple tree would be magnifique - which one I wonder. How long does it take for an apple tree to grow enough to start fruiting?

Think it depends what age/size of tree you buy. We bought a 'family' tree (three varieties of apple grafted onto one rootstock) and it was fruiting after about 4 years, I think.

an apple tree might be a bit much unless her parents have a huge garden to put it in
my sister and i were both given roses as children by friends of my parents and it's a lovely thing - they survive for years. maybe worry less about name and i think more about colour/fragrance/something with long flowering season so lots to look at.

I like the idea of a woodland trust tree - it's a nice idea toi get a plant but it would run through my mind as a paretn of 2 under 2 that its something else to look after!!! hehehe
