Anyone grown mushrooms?

I am tempted! We have a logpile at the end of the garden and I've just got a seed catalogue which sells wooden dowels which you stick into a hole in the log.
Any advantages to growing inside or outside, I wonder?

only ever grown then indoors and had great success. people stopped visiting me though as they always got loads of mushrooms to take home as I seemed to be inundated with them
I have some naturally occurring ones at the bottom of the garden, I think I have identified them as being edible but won't chance it!!
the ones indoors I had could be grown all year round, I believe the outdoor ones only ''fuit'' this time of year???????

Thanks Misi.
What sort of mushroom were they? And what form did you buy them in?

(I would love to 'forage' for mushrooms by the way, but I recently got a book on identifying them and frankly it all looks terrifying!)

they were white, mushroom shaped with closed cap
I honestly don't know. I hate mushrooms but grew them for my mum who loves them but has never grown them successfully herself. I got them from a garden nursery called notcutts. they came in a white polystyrene box but I bought 2 boxes and had made up my own box from gravel boards as I was not expecting the ready to use kit that I did get. I had already got some compost and horse manure with added straw but the kits did come ready with compost in them. the box was at the end of my garage (I don't use the garage for a car, it is my second kitchen/laundry room) and they grew for 4 months prolifically. when I dumped the used comp[ost in my compost bin, I did find more mushrooms a few weeks later in the bin!! you can buy similar kits in B+Q I think. they are usually the more common closed cap bog standard type you get in the shops but I have seen kits online for oyster, shiitake and maitake mushrooms. this is similar to what I had www.gardeningexpress.co.uk/ProductDetails.asp?ProductID=10802 but I believe the shiitake etc types are grown on logs like you have seen already.
