It's me, the novice again! Anyone offer advice for growing poppies from seed?

I have kindly been given some yellow poppy seeds through Freecycle, and the man warned me that they spread - great! That's exactly what I am after.
Anyway, what is the best way to go about it? Do I wait until spring and sow the seeds straight into the soil? Could I put them into a pot now and keep it inside until spring?

Our poppies were already in when we moved in, so have never grown from seed, sorry. I'd say it's probably always best to start them off indoors tho?

we sow ours in the autumn straight onto the soil - they cope with the cold and germinate in the spring

I'd do that with some of yours then if nothing's come up in the spring, sow the ones you've saved

Are the yellow poppies Welsh mountain ones? If so they are really pretty, spread everywhere and only about 6 inches high.

poppies like to go in to soil that gets turned over (all those poppies from 1st world war were dormant in the ground until they got bombed and churned over and back into the light). If you sprinkle some around now then have a good weed in the spring they should be very happy indeed. But do what Mrs Badger says, save some for spring just in case.
