So what has worked well for you this year and what hasnt worked well?
For us (am down south!):
-Good- -year-
Potatoes - turned into triffids, took over garden
Rhubarb (grew ginormous and is still going)
Autumn raspberries
Sweetcorn
Strawberries

-bad- -year-
pears - where did they go?
romanesco - attacked by slugs, cats and then cat broke through netting so cabbage whites got in. They are still ankle high.
Globe artichokes - they just wouldnt grow!!!
lettuces - slugs got the lot. 3 times.
peas - never get the hang of them.

Good year:
Apples (tonnes)
Rhubarb
Lettuce (plenty all summer)
Tomatoes
Carrots
Sweetcorn
mint (well, it's a weed really)
chives & basil
Celeriac*

Average yesr:
Courgette
Squash (av. to poor really, only one decent fruit per plant)
Onion (harvested too late - several starting to rot)
Spinach
LeekParsnip

Bad Year:
Swedes/ Brocolli/ Cabbage (all brassicas munched by caterpillars as usual)
Runner Beans (tried dwarf variety, poor yield & then got some sort of disease)
French beans (just didn't work)

*based on expected yield - haven't really harvested any/many yet)

err leeks and parsnips were supposed to be asterisked rather than parsnips being bold

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/09/2008 19:54

Sounds like a reasonable year for you
must have been a bad year for beans - even the ones we've had from riverford have been dreadful!

Yes, I think it was pretty good . I have my fingers crossed to get an allotment next month, so will hopefully be able to grow lots more next year.

Do give parsnips a go badkitten. It was my first try with them this year & I pulled 4 up for sunday roast last weekend and one was so big I really, really struggled to get it out - it must have been at least 18" long (and that was with the end snapped off). Tasty too, but they're supposed to be even better after the frost has got them (not sure mine will last that long).

I will do!!! I love the idea of gigantic parsnips
