Basil question

Normally I grow loads of basil and end up giving it away, but this year has been a total failure. Once the basil grows to about 4 cms it seems to go brown at the bottom and then wilt and die. My first lot was all in one big tub, so I decided to try seperate little pots just in case it was some disease that wiped it all out. The same thing has happened again and I have no fresh basil. To top it off I am looking after my neighbours plants at the moment and she has a fab bunch of basil on show (in fact everything in her garden puts mine to shame and its quite depressing becasue with the same soil, same weather I can't find any other reason than I really have no idea what I am doing )

That sounds like damping off. You might need to try a fresh lot of compost.

agree with twinklemegan - and watch what you are watering with (clean water for seedlings if you have damping off problems). and clean the pots you are growing it in.

Thanks. Do you think I may have watered them too much? Is there any way to save them, or just start again?

Hi Mung. It's possible you've watered them too much. You won't be able to save them I'm afraid. Just start again and clean out all your pots as missingtheaction said.

I've had weedy little basil plants this year too and had just put it down to growing outside rather than inside on the windowsill as usual! Thanks for the tips, will turf it out and start again!
