A massive pile of pure moving earth.
It looks like big sort of ants and maggots .Theres lots of round holes in it and its so horrid.
The rest of the compost bin is still full of uncomposted fruit and veg which i have been trying to compost for 2 years.
The top literally looks like someons has tipped 100 litres of freshly bought compost (and we didn`t honest ) which has been worked up into some sort of moving nest.
Its made me feel all itchy !
Has anyone else had this ?
Please say yes ! x

sounds perfect doesn't it?

bozza · 03/07/2008 21:45

Sorry no. Does sound like it might be an anthill but never heard of them in compost bins. Could you dig a bit out with a spade or poke it with a fork and see what type of creatures emerge? Why is it not composting though is the other question? Do you just put fruit and veg on? Do you ever stir it up or anything?

FromGirders · 03/07/2008 21:48

I had an anthill in my compost bin last year. As fast as I chucked stuff on top of it, they turned it into lovely dark brown compost!
I didn't know what to do with them, so ended up doing nothing, then in the end, they all died in winter.
then I moved house, and had to leave it behind

sounds like your compost critters are doing just the job they are there to do...making compost out of your leftovers . You need to keep giving it a stir and making sure you are putting in garden matter/newspaper/egg boxes/kitchen paper and not just kitchen waste.

Minky why does it sound perfect ? Its horrid ?
Bozza i did have lots of compost at the bottom last year to be honest but not really addes any dry this year so far so did have lots of fruit flies.
Anthill sounds exactly like what it is.
I p[oked it with a cane and there is lots of what looks like yellow maggots underneath-maybe some sort of larvae ?
EEEEEk

I love the idea of compost but I hate having to do it. Mans work.

I once found a rat in ours.

Could the maggots in fact be ant eggs? That's what we've currently got.

ravenAK · 03/07/2008 23:07

Ant eggs are fine. Are they cylindrical & about 2mm?

If so chill, they're doing a great job!

Wrapping kitchen leftovers in a couple of layers of newspaper works for us. Saves disposing of newspaper, keeps the fruit flies down & keeps it all balanced & ticking over.

fakeblonde · 03/07/2008 23:19

mmm could be ant eggs.
When i`ve seen maggots they are whiter .These are more yellow and smaller .

Sounds like ant eggs, then. Learnt on another thread here that an ant's nest in a compost heap is a sign it's too dry.

callmeovercautious · 06/07/2008 20:37

If it is ants then put water on and stir it up/get DH to stir it

They are doing a great job honestly!
