Dug over some borders today filled with weeds and want to plant something easy that will look nice, my first thought is Lavender? On a budget too….dont mind if they don’t last long just need an idea quickly!

Quickest, cheapest and easiest way would be to just cover the whole area with some neat bark chips, and stand a couple of pots of flowers on the top.

I agree with the poster above, there is also the state of the weather to consider as would need a lot of watering. Is there a hosepipe ban where you are? Bark chippings and I like some symmetry so would do 2 lavender pots each side and then a smaller pot in between and so six pots in total?

Just go to the garden centre the day before and buy whatever looks nicest that day!

Verbena?

Agree with bark & pots, but the beware the bark might smell of manure (I’m a mulch addict and my family are always complaining about the smell. The only think I’d risk planting now is perovskia.

Would lavender be an option? Don’t want to just sit pots on top, would rather plant them but bark could look smarter? Good idea.

Professional here. Hate bark- only use it for woodland paths. Lavender's fine. Or the suggestion about whatever looks good in the garden centre. Or whatever you fancy. I presume you have a watering can, so yeah...

LittleBearPad · 16/08/2026 18:22

Lavender will work and it doesn’t need much water once watered in.

LittleBearPad · 16/08/2026 18:23

Excellent for bees too

Panda34 · 16/08/2026 18:32

Yeah I reckon lavender will be fine, doesn’t need much watering either

I'm not a great gardener (understatement!) but in this situation a couple of times I've had great success checking out the reduced section at a couple of different places. Often plants are reduced because they are in full flower which is great if you don't mind if they don't last. Often even if they are a bit wilted they perk up with a good drink
