I’ve just redone the flower bed at the end of the garden but I’m not sure about it. I like the planting and the pots but is the edging border to high?

I’ve spent so long looking at it and I really can’t decide. The bed behind the border edging is raised but it’s not actually holding any earth back.

basically I’m fed up. It took me all day in this heat but now all I can see is a big brown barrier

AIBU? Hit me with your thoughts

for reference, the garden is 80ft and this bed is at the far end

This is a better pic I think for scale

I think it looks really lovely! Good job🌸
the edging border is not too high or obvious at all, it defines the space nicely.

Aww, you're being very hard on yourself, getting ANY gardening done in this weather is a massive achievement.
The border looks gorgeous, your balance and colours of plants and pots and statuary is lovely.

I can't decide about the border to the border either. It's very pretty being basketweave rather than the usual things so for it to have some prominence seems right? I'd leave it for now and see if I came to love it or not.
And pat yourself on the back for doing some serious gardening!

Oh thank you that’s really good to hear. DH is frightened to give any opinion on it now as I’m going round in circles so I have no one to give me an unbiased opinion x

Plants will grow over it and soften it, before you know it you'll hardly see it👍
My neighbour built mine with upturned paving slabs, I hated it at first as it was all I could see, 18" of grey slate look a like, but now you can hardly see it for flowers🌺

@TemporarilyCantDoMyself thank you. I’m in danger of becoming obsessed over it, I need to get a life 😂

Looks just brilliant to me. Your grass is parched right now but when that's green and your plants have established it's all going to be perfect.

twiddlingthumbs69 · 10/08/2026 20:20

@Mossstitch thank you. There’s actually quite a deep dip behind the edging so I’m thinking of planting some overhanging plants there. Unfortunately we are on chalk and the bed is in full sun all day so I’m a bit limited. Geranium maybe?

I think it looks lovely. But if you want to soften it a little more, you could maybe dig a channel along the front and plant some low things like aubretia, thrifts etc so there isn't a hard line between the grass (or what passes for grass these days 🙂) and the brown. Like the weave pattern BTW.

twiddlingthumbs69 · 11/08/2026 12:12

@FizzingAda that’s a good idea! I’ve just potted up some trailing ivy to drape over the top but I think I’ll do your idea as well. Thrifts is a great idea thank you

I'm clearly odd because my eye was drawn to the little figurine in the bird bath and thought they were pleasuring themselves 😳
The planting looks ok. I guess I'd worry if the basket type pots will degrade and fade within a year or 2? Are they meant to be outdoor pots?

twiddlingthumbs69 · 11/08/2026 13:11

@7238SM 😂. The pots are actually plastic
