Are my potted acers doomed?

Or can they recover from being frazzled this summer (SE England)? They also suffered wind burn a few weeks back, I think.

We've had two small acers for a few years and they've previously looked lovely. Each one is in a large pot. Obviously we've been watering - but perhaps not enough? Should we be feeding them too? Both get morning sun, then shade from about midday/1pm.

Any advice gratefully received.

Mine have suffered too. We had quite a breezy week or so and it's been so hot. I moved it but there's no where in the garden that avoids all the breeze. I have noticed some new growth on the end though so think it must be ok?

@PrincessFiorimonde Don't feed them, no. Plants use nutrients when they are in strong active growth, and they won't be needing it at the moment, they are under too much stress. Water them generously (but not so the soil is constantly waterlogged), and you can get the leaves wet, despite all those old tales that say not.

Also, have a container of water beside each one, so the evaporation from it increases the air humidity around the plant.

If they are in pots, can you move them until this relentless sun & heat dies down?
Our Acer is in the ground and suffers mid-summer when the sun is directly overhead but will start to get more daytime shade as the month moves on, the rest of the time it is pretty sheltered and protected from winds. Leaves have suffered a bit (like last year) but there is plenty of new growth.
Looking to put a sail up to protect it next year.

Thanks for your comments. We can't move the pots without them going to a spot where they'd have morning shade and then sun from midday onwards.

Will make sure they have plenty of water, but won't feed them. I like the tip about putting containers of water close by.

It's heartening to hear that heat-stressed acers are beginning to show new growth!

Can you hang a cloth over them, give them a bit more protection? MIL has net curtains she uses to protect the fruit bushes from birds, but they’d help shade things too I’d think.

Shade them and water in the evening only. They can recover
