Giant poinsettia

Just thought I’d share the progress of the poinsettia (I thought it was poinsietta but iPhone disagrees) I was gifted in the Christmas before last. I noticed it had new growth in the January after so I kept it, usually they die on me. Anyway, it’s a monster! I repotted it early this year in a pot that felt huge at the time but I think I need to repot it again? Has anyone else kept one this long?

Does it produce the nice red leaves ever? I have a little one that was struggling a bit until I moved it to a very shady greenhouse spot. But I'm waiting for it to prove its worth. If it isn't going to give me that 'supermarket ready' look, I can't see that it is worth keeping.

I have one too OP. From the supermarket, now enormous - I’ve probably had it for three years.

And yes - it goes red in winter!

Also unsure what to do with it, as it is now huge. I wonder if they could live outdoors.

No it doesn’t sadly, because it gets too much light. You have to keep them in absolute darkness for (I think) about 18 hours a day from September onwards to get the red leaves by Christmas. I think some people manage this by covering it with a box, but mine was already too big last September

Oh really! Do you cover yours for the red leaves? I don’t want to move it, I can’t repot it and leave it there indefinitely though!

That's lovely. I had one that lasted a while, but nowhere near as good as that.

Tell you what I did find out though - they are part of the euphorbia family and have toxic sap so be careful and don't let the sap get on your skin.
