Wilting Hydrangeas

We have White Mophead hydrangeas that are wilting and many of the petals have turned brown.
I’m not sure if it’s the heat or overwatering has done them in.
Wise Gardener Mumsnetters should I deadhead them ?

Ours are doing well despite being in the full glare of the sun. They need fuckloads of water though. Luckily for us, we have a drip irrigation system which comes on in the evening. They are allowed despite the hosepipe ban.

My pink hydrangeas were drooping and turning brown. I started giving them a bucket of water every morning and they've returned to their usual perkiness.

Oddly enough the white hydrangea, planted in the same location, has been fine throughout.

But yes, water. Lots of water and deadheading. That's what sorted mine out, they need far more water than you think.

They are very thirsty - we don’t have a hydration system and the hydrangeas were definitely the most sad when we came back from a week’s holiday.

Are they in the ground or pots?
How long have you had them?
Have they ever done anything similar?

Unless they're in pots I truly doubt you could be overwatering them, the dry soil will just suck up the excess water. Much more likely underwatering for the drought.

I doubt you have managed to overwater. It is more likely lack of water. I am in the south east, my hydrangeas are doing fine but I water them regularly. As PP says they are thirsty plants.

I think it is too much sun.
My question really is - Do you deadhead the flowers or just leave them.
They are in the ground.

I deadhead mine but only because I use the old flowerheads in decor (they're very structural, aren't they?) That's the pink one. The white one and another one I leave for the insects and they all seem to grow and flower just as well as each other.

mine are suffering too @deeahgwitch.
In pots and I do water them but still brown. The leaves look ok

Hydra = water so it's a good indicator that it needs lots of water .

Whereabouts are you?
I very much doubt you’ve over watered them. They are incredibly thirsty shrubs, ours are wilting dreadfully in the SE, I dump a full watering can on each of them every week but it doesn’t touch the sides. I’d imagine yours are just thirsty.
