Bedding plants for a windy garden

My garden is quite exposed and catches the full force of any westerly wind. Even on sunny days this week we’ve averaged winds of around 11mph at least.

i’ve finally come to the conclusion that some bedding plants - verbena, petunias, calibrachoa - just can’t withstand the wind and a couple of my pots just look ruined now.

For next year, what bedding would you recommend that is more robust? I’ve lots of geraniums and use cosmos to add colour (they’re great in the wind but very thirsty if in pots). This is why I gave up on baskets a few years ago!

Maybe wander round the local area and see what grows well in your neighbours' gardens?

It’s not so much about what grows well, it what will survive the wind. I’ve pretty much got my borders sorted with shrubs and perennials but I’m struggling with bedding to add for summer colour.

Looking in others’ gardens doesn’t really help me as we’re in a semi rural area where houses have differing aspect and levels of shelter.

Try nemesias, they look very pretty in amongst the pelargoniums and despite looking delicate because the flowers are small I find them quite robust and they grow quite bushy. Flower well and long too.

Thanks
@TemporarilyCantDoMyself I will have a look at nemesias, I don't have any in my garden.

Oh and they smell lovely too! And heliotrope - that's quite low growing and robust and smells divine. Both nemesias and heliotrope sold as annuals for bedding. I've got some pictures of mine (not taken today because I'm not at home). The purple with the butterfly on is the heliotrope. 🤩
