Gardener friend struggling with large hedges, should I stop him?

Having a tricky morning…
my friends boyfriend has been a gardener for a couple of years and so I asked him if he fancied cutting my hedges the one in the front garden is probably 10ft maybe bigger…it’s huge.
He turned up at 10 ( it’s boiling thought he’d be here at 8) he’s been trying to cut the hedge for 2.5 hours. I’ve missed the tip booking. He doesn’t have the proper tools his ladder is tiny and his hedge trimmer is probably less powerful than mine. My neighbour has offered his ladder. He’s making a right dogs dinner of the hedge.
Hea supposed to be here fur the day and hasn’t even started on the back yet. I don’t mind being a test case for him and I’m hoping he’s learnt something. Get more powerful tools and turn up with the right equipment…do I just let him get on with it. There’s another huge one in the back garden I’m not sure whether he should do it.
Help!

I'd ask him to stop if he's damaging your hedges and being unsafe. Working at height with power tools with the wrong equipment is asking for trouble.

Up to you if you decide to pay him for what he's been able to do.

I would tell him to stop personally & ask him to come back when he has required the correct equipment.

He’s regretting not starting at 8am… I’m letting him get on with it but it’s painful to watch.

It’s the wrong time of year for anything but a light trim for hedges. Hope you checked for birds nests! He doesn’t sound a particularly professional gardener if hes willing to do a hard cut this time of year and in this heat…wait till the autumn!

"been a gardener" in the sense of has training, insurance etc? or in the sense of provides a bit of outdoors unskilled labour on an ad hoc basis?

I would stop him.

Football?

Are you paying by the hour or for the job. If the latter, it's his problem.

Wrong time of year for cutting hedges. Is he insured? Would you be liable if he injured himself?

Dolphin78 · 06/07/2026 13:31

I thought he was RHS trained (yes I checked for bests) and he’s just done a garden design course and has done regular clients with big gardens. I think he’s underestimated the job and he’s the boyfriend of a close friend so it’s feeling awkward. In any other circumstance I’d say stop…

@senua paying for the day and no not watching the football he’s been away for the weekend and thought he’d have a late start after being away…
