First time growing dahlias in pots, is it too early for flowers?

I’m growing some dahlias from tubers for the first time this year. I planted them inside in March, kept them in for weeks and moved them outside at the end of April. The plants have grown to a decent size and have lots of leaves but zero flowers or buds. Not even the hint of a bud.

Should they have flowers on them by now? Or is it still too early?

How often should I be watering them in this heat? They are in large pots.

Id like to know too, I tried to grow from tubers last year but didnt get any flowers, got fed up this year and bought them ready blooming in pots from a plant sale...but now the slugs are eating them....

Yes I want to know too- planted a tuber in April and it has leaves.. think it may be a bit early 🤞 I adore dahlias

Mine (planted in the ground) are coming into bud now. South East.

It’s early yet! I have some in flower at the front of the house where there is a sun trap but all the others are a fair way from flowering .

I’m in the south east. My first year growing from tubers, one of them was much faster than the other and has just bloomed its first flower. The slower one unfortunately has been gorged on by slugs :( so I’m not sure if it’s going to recover! But it definitely wouldn’t have been producing buds yet if it hadn’t been eaten. So I wouldn’t worry just yet :)

Mine were grown from seed last year and left in the ground. Several in flower now. North East.

Beebumble2 · 25/06/2026 11:27

Have you fed them, tomato food is good. Some of mine grown from tubers are flowering others are not yet. I’m in the midlands.

AbsoluteHoot · 25/06/2026 11:32

Yes our tubers that I lifted really late have flowered. One has completely changed colour which is odd. I don’t know what colour it was, but it’s now yellow. I would NEVER buy yellow. 🤨

Mine in pots are a combination of flowering / coming into bud / just leaves.
I'm in East Anglia.

At the moment I'm watering daily.

@Chasingsquirrels - wow gorgeous. I aspire my garden to be like that next year

I have one out of ten that is flowering. Very disappointed so far. A couple have masses of leaves but no sign of flowers. I'm hoping they'll all get going soon 🤞

Darkspiderplant · 15/07/2026 22:21

Still no flowers for me. Just lots and lots and lots of leaves.

They are fairly late in flowering compared to a lot of other plants I think, but the advantage of that is that they are still going when many others have shot their bolt.

HollyHoly · 16/07/2026 20:44

It’s still pretty early and it depends on which kind of Dahlia. All of mine are in pots. The one that typically flowers for me first is now flowering and I have a couple of others in bud. Others show no sign of buds yet. I think if you’ve got a a lot of leaf on your dahlias, you could take away the lowest ones and that might help. They should also get a potassium feed weekly, although the general guidance is not to use this in extreme temperatures because it puts more stress on the plant.

Did you pinch them out? In big enough pots?

Mine haven't flowered yet here in southern Scotland but its been fairly cold until the last weeks warmth and the last one way back whenever. We moved house in March and the ones I brought from the old house have lots of giant buds ready to go. My new ones are all still really small still.

They love tomato food. They like a lot of water. My Mum used to grow them. She lifted the tubers each year and turned them upside down and put straw around them in our shed. Mid May she'd put them back in the garden again. She always had a fabulous display. They should be flowering by now.

MrsArcher23 · 16/07/2026 22:47

They are a late summer/early Autumn flower, depending on where you live. I have individual plants in flower but it will be another month before they show their full glory.

mumumental · 16/07/2026 22:52

Why they start, they flower till October.

Westernsky · 16/07/2026 22:53

Mine have been flowering since the third week in June! They’re in pots in a very sunny spot though. I haven’t fed them yet, but they’re watered daily.

mumumental · 17/07/2026 06:00

When planted earlier, they can do. It’s not odd that some don’t.
