Could anyone tell me what tree variety this is, please? It’s ten or twelve feet high — these leaves ar3 just protruding from low down on the trunk. Thank you!

Looks like an ornamental maple but there are so many I have no idea which.

It’s some type of acer, perhaps a sycamore.

Do the leaves at the top of the tree look the same as these ones?

Are these leaves growing from twigs that come out from the main trunk ? If so you can cut them off neatly with some sharp secateurs where they join the trunk. Try not to rip the bark.

Its an Acer of some sort. Could be Sycamore or Norway Maple, or the native Field Maple though the leaves look a bit large for that. Or maybe one of many ornamental garden acers. Does it have good autumn colour? The shade of autumn leaves would be a clue.

Thanks, everyone. Yes, those leaves are on twigs emerging from the main trunk. Not sure about autumn colour. Will have to keep an eye this year.

I would guess Norway maple - leaves are a lovely colour and shape - you could do to look it up and try to work out what it is as some maples are huge and if you don’t want a full size tree in the garden the time to cut it down is before it gets too big

So they are not suckers, which are on bendy green stems that come from the base of the trunk under the ground.

You can cut them off now when they are small, to make your tree look tidy. If they are bigger then you need to do it from November to March when your tree is dormant.
