Can I divide this dahlia?

Started some saved tubers off in pots and this one has come up well.

Can I divide it in three? Shall I cut the tuber so that there is a stem and bit of tuber for each intended plant?

Or shall I just plant the whole thing.

Yes, you can divide it, especially as the three shoots are so far apart.

I would gently take the whole thing out and brush off the soil so you can see exactly where to cut (use a clean, sharp knife) then repot them separately.

You need to pinch out the main stems too.

Will do that, hopefully there’ll be a break in the rain tomorrow.

They’re all quite leggy, I’m
thinking of lopping off quite a bit 😳

I have a massively root bound one with very densely packed stems. Is it the right time to split it?

Yes, it's a good time as they are in full growth mode. Can't guarantee that every bit will survive, but the bits that do will benefit

They look good and strong, I would take out the main stems above the third set of leaves.

Timely thread. I grew some dahlias from seed last year and some were fabulous. However they're in the wrong place and I didn't know whether to move them, so if this is a good time I'll crack on.

All relatively new for me too, but if they have stems it’s easier to work out where to cut. Each stem will
need a bit of tuber I believe.

Get them in the ground or pots so they can hopefully romp away!

Took out the main stems and have stuck those with some rooting powder in pots to see if they’ll grow.

Planted the main plants so just need to protect them from the slugs!
