Why is my peace lily so miserable?

I’ve had my peace lily for a year or so and it’s not doing well. Over winter it seemed ok in the northwest facing window - it’s one flower died off though and no new ones appearing. Now it’s just so droopy - it doesn’t seem to make a difference if I water it more or less. Have fed it a couple or times and if anything it
seemed to make it sadder. Doesn’t appear to be root bound. I’ve moved it away from the window as thought might be too sunny

Mine are happiest on my North facing windowsills, so maybe moving them will help? They get a thorough soaking weekly. It’s all a bit trial and error though, I confess.

GiaGia16 · 31/05/2026 19:38

They are very dramatic, have pretty much given up with them. Don’t seem to like anything.

Thedogswhiskers · 31/05/2026 19:44

It’s so odd, I’ll try moving it further from the window. Oh, and I use filtered water as read they like rain water?

Mine seems to be doing better in a sunnier position. They don’t like to completely dry out - steady watering, not dry out then soak.

Mine is a complete drama queen. Too much sunny - droopy - not enough water - droopy - not enough sun - droopy - masses of water and a bit of sun - happy days.

Mine was better the more I forgot about it. It'd go really droopy then I'd water it, and it would perk up again. I felt bad for it so bought it a nice big pot to re-pot it in, new compost full of nutrients and put it near a window...it's sort of spread out a bit and settled into it's new home, but it hasn't flowered for years.

Thedogswhiskers · 01/06/2026 22:17

ok, so I think I’m going to try less sun and more water. And perhaps a re-pot. It’s currently nice and damp from yesterdays watering but still as droopy as anything

That’s odd. Mine perk up quickly after a drenching, if they’ve been looking a bit sad. They have no direct sunlight ever, though. They flower occasionally too.

GandTtwice · 01/06/2026 22:33

I have mine which is about 12 years old close to an north/east facing window so it gets plenty of light but little direct sunlight. I water thoroughly about every 10 days and it still flowers regularly. I read somewhere that you need to be a bit neglectful and they thrive better and it does seem to be true

cleowasmycat · 01/06/2026 22:39

I’ve added coffee grounds and egg shell to mine and it just started flowering after 2 years!! Might be a coincidence though as I also repotted it

GreenMarigold · 01/06/2026 22:42

Mine is the most dramatic houseplant I’ve ever owned. It’s never happy, and I’ve run out of places to move it to! It makes do with a north facing hallway and grudgingly flowers every so often.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 01/06/2026 22:48

They are very dramatic.

Ive not had great luck with them but the only one that looks okay ish is in a bright sunny warm spot.

They don’t like to be under or over watered, so I water a small amount from the bottom once a week or so.

Silverstag · 01/06/2026 22:53

Mine is doing really well with loads of flowers. It’s on a table near a South facing window. When it droops I water it with water that has been left to sit in a jug overnight to let any chlorine evaporate off. It’s the only plant I am managing to keep healthy!

AsIsaidearlier · 01/06/2026 23:03

Ive killed every peace lily I’ve ever owned and there have been many over the years. If you underwater them they droop overwatering makes them droop. They are the most temperamental plant ever. I keep reading you can’t kill peace lilies but I would beg to differ.

Tabitha500 · 03/06/2026 07:33

I keep my peace lily in my bathroom, it only gets sun in the afternoons and is right next to a radiator, which is on during the winter! I water it from the bottom when it feels dry and a quick shower once a month or so!

The pot sits in another pot which has stones in the bottom so it doesn’t sit in water! It must like the humidity after our showers, but it does only flower about once a year!

MyBoysHaveDogsNames · 03/06/2026 07:46

Ask Anne from Amanda land!

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 03/06/2026 07:49

Mine was foisted on me and was an absolute arsehole...I planted it in the garden so it could die and I could get some peace...(see what I did there)

3 years on its a monster. Its grown to about 90cm by 90cm if not bigger with 5 flowers on it now...

How? I dont know...it should be dead.

Leavesandthings · 03/06/2026 17:03

I've got a couple of mahoosive peace lilies that flower. I have split and given away so much peace lilly!

I water them when their leaves are drooping, and really drench them. I will leave them standing in a couple of cms of water.

One is in a dark hallway and one is in a north facing room away from a window.

Thedogswhiskers · 03/06/2026 17:12

There seems neither rhyme nor reason as to what makes these plants tick!
