My greenhouse is trashed and all my seedlings ruined :o(

The farking wind has knocked over everything on the shelf in the greenhouse (cheap pvc covered one, walls moving in the wind and knocked everything over).

A tray of cabbage and brocolli seedlings
A tray of saladlings
A tray of mixed chillis and peppers

All farking trashed, and some of the trays landed on a couple of my tomato plants which are broken too; after all my hard work

saving grace is a mixed tray of peas and leeks was OK.

and I moved my pumpkins this morning as they were crowding out the beetroot in the veg patch and they are now looking very, very, very sad indeed and they were the only thing actually doing really well in the garden.

this veg gardening can be soul destroying sometimes

Oh dear. I heard about the wind on the news yesterday and moved all my plants into the garage. I'm not happy about them being in the dark, but they wouldn't have survived in the wind.
Are you sure you can't salvage some of it?

EffiePerine · 22/06/2008 18:43

Could you stick them all together and see if any survive?

Poor you - it's been windy here but nothing like as strong as gales.

lackaDAISYcal · 22/06/2008 18:50

We think we can save the saladlings, as they were in seed trays with individual cells, but the peppers and cabbages and brocolli were just in standard seed trays and all that's left is a pile of compost with some seedlings in it. I might have a go after the kids are in bed and see what I can salvage....and I'll move them into the garage till this wind goes.

I was in a really good mood until this. Call this summer

Are my pumpkins likely to pick up? Could it just be the shock of being moved? I'm a bit of a gardening virgin so it's all new.

am looking at proper greenhouses on the web, but DH says No

Apparently there have been gusts of between 50mph and 70mph locally.

So much for global warming!

wotulookinat · 22/06/2008 19:02

we've got heavy rain and a miserable grey sky here in Yorkshire but the wind seems to have died down just a little bit.

SaintGeorge · 22/06/2008 19:05

Water, water, water for the pumpkins, but a gradual, constant source if you can rather than swamping them.

Mind you, looking at the clouds above us at the moment, mother nature might take care of that one for you.

lackaDAISYcal · 22/06/2008 19:12

I'm in N Leeds watulookinat. Wind has now gone down a lot, but it's been pretty hairy here all day. I couldn't get the back door open earlier as the wind was so strong.

lackadaisical. I'm feeling sad too as I've lost several of my courgette plants (just blown straight out of the ground). I'm cursing myself as I had them covered with fleece, & only took it off about a week ago.
And I hate to say it doublebluff but 'extreme weather' like these high winds, the mad rains last summer etc are exactly what is predicted for Britain as a result of climate change. Basically warmer average temperatures but much more unpredictability. Bummer for us growers eh

Gutting.
I had to rescue dds sunflowers that are in a competition next week, they had been blew over and had fell out of the pots, sun had dryed up the roots...they have came back to life though.

callmeovercautious · 22/06/2008 20:21

Get out there and "Prick" them out of the pile into small pots now. Put them on every windowsill you have for a few days then move them back outside gradually.

Wind is bad here but not like yours. I am in the Fens so it has no buffer! Fairly usual around here though. DDs scarecrow did fall on my little leeks though - very annoyed about that

blackrock · 22/06/2008 20:28

stick them into pots and try to salvage what you can

lackaDAISYcal · 22/06/2008 20:34

I have managed to save about two thirds of the cabbages and about a third of the brocolli, plus hopefully a few chilli plants (although which variety is which now is anyone's guess!) and a few basil plants, but those were tiny so I'll just sow some more. And I think the saladlings will be ok; I've just shoved em back in but they want pricking out tomorrow.
I've put everything on the floor, but am worried the slugs and snails will have a feast tonight as they will be accessible. Hate using them, but some slug pellets on the floor might be called for as the greenhouse isn't slug/snail proof.

I'm not feeling quite so bad now.

Thanks

Hi
We lost all our salads too - similar sort of greenhouse - similar sort of wind. 3rd time we've lost them this summer- previous 2 were cos stupidly forgetting to open it in the morning and sun came out and we were late back.... totally wilted.

keep going...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/06/2008 20:58

for you all. Glad you managed to save some seedlings lackaDAISYcal
Even down here in the south where its only been gusting to 30mph, I've been worrying about my sweetcorn plants - it doesnt take that much to snap them.

Washersaurus · 22/06/2008 21:00

DH's little greenhouse suffered a similar fate today - I think he managed to rescue a few of his seedlings. Luckily most of his plants are in the 'proper' greenhouse.

It has been very windy here today - on the plus side though, I have dried loads and loads of washing and my duvet is now well aired

MsPontipine · 22/06/2008 23:18

Moved our little cherry tomato plants around the garden about 4 times trying to find a sheltered spot before bringing them inside - they're sitting by the French windows now with a lovely view of the patio.

We have lost a sunflower though.

Earthymama · 22/06/2008 23:55

My daughter was growing a fab cucumber with the children but got up this morning to find it had snapped at the base. It's so disheartening.

This weather is dreadful...mid-summer with no drinks, meals or celebrations outside. I can't believe the days will get shorter now.

Will take my miserable self off to bed

jajas, there's still time for some peas, beans, carrots and some salad stuff and radishes etc.

you could always get some tomato plants from the garden centre as well.

The carnage isn't looking so bad today, but I fear for my pumpkins. Maybe the day of gale force winds wasn't the best time to move them....
