Mystery plant.

Can anyone identify this plant for me?
I’m pretty sure I didn’t plant it; it’s in my border and has been hidden amongst daffodils leaves so I haven’t noticed it until now. It’s about 30cm tall.
An internet image search has not been conclusive. I’m not sure if it’s a weed so I’ve left it for now.
Thanks!

Are the edges of the leaves sharp? it looks like sea holly to me.

painthisbathroom · 21/05/2026 22:25

It looks a bit like artemisia

EdithStourton · 21/05/2026 22:28

Phacelia?
If you live near fields, the seeds could easily have blown in. It's a green manure and very popular with bees. The flowers are very pretty.

It looks to me like a mallow species, possibly Malva rosea or similar

The leaves are soft. The stem looks quite sturdy and thick.

There were lots of these growing in the local area last year so it could be. I think the leaves aren’t quite right though.

I would agree that it is not Phacelia, and nor is it Seaholly

Do the leaves have a slightly musky scent if you crush them?

That would be nice. I’ve had a google and the flowers look beautiful but I haven’t been able to find an image of the leaves.
At the moment mine has no signs of any flowers so perhaps I’ll leave it a little longer and see what develops.

Here's a pic of a pink musk mallow (in bloom), you can see the leaves a bit

I’ve just googled it. It could be. I think I need to let it grow a bit longer.

Hello, I discovered one of these in my garden last year hidden between a geranium and a lupin. It's a mallow and has pink flowers later in summer. I left mine in, it's bigger this year.

PinkCatCushion · 22/05/2026 07:46

I’ve crushed the leaves. They doesn’t really smell of anything much: maybe a vague smell of cut grass.
here is a close up photo of a couple of leaves.

I just searched ‘malva moschata leaves‘ and a copyrighted picture showed leaves exactly like yours.

What a nice surprise to find in your garden.

friskybivalves · 22/05/2026 07:54

Definitely a musk mallow. Moths love them and use them for food!

I'd agree the leaves aren't quite right. You'll know when it flowers!

EdithStourton · 22/05/2026 08:41

And looking at the second pic, definitely not phacelia.
