Why is my Jasmine dying?

This is the 2nd lot that's not made it. What am I doing wrong? Over or under watering? Wrong size pots? Wrong location (back garden, NW England, sunny spot)? Something else? At the point of giving up now and trying a clematis instead.

What is the soil/compost it's planted in?

Some peat-free composts are really pants unfortunately and need amending with good garden soil, homemade compost, etc.

I would suggest - plant in the ground or open bottomed planter with a good soil/compost mix.

It's also a large plant in a small pot so has probably been water stressed from going from wet to dry extremes.

Is it planted in compost or soil based compost like John Innes? It needs proper soil and, with that amount of foliage, a lot of water and some feeding. Drill big holes in the planter's base so the roots can escape and spread into the soil.

Mine did pretty well for a few years in a raised bed with top soil in it growing against a trellis in a north facing garden in Yorkshire. Then one year it didn't grow back after I cut it back too hard.

I have a new one this year, will try again.

Do they like sun or shade

To be honest it looks like one force grown under ideal commercial conditions and then sold to the unwary while looking its best. I have a massive one; it’s planted in the ground, has a south facing wall to grow on, and it gets cut back firmly immediately after flowering to stop it taking over the world. But it took two or three years of getting its roots down before it showed any inclination to get going.

what was it about it you loved? The scent?
