What’s this likely to be? New bed and it has popped up. I have no idea!

the plant appears to be Southernwood (Artemisia abrotanum)

Riverpaddling · 06/05/2026 23:33

Is it pheasants eye?

Agapornis · 06/05/2026 23:43

Non-image search AI answer - is it not just cosmos? Mind you, it seems far too statuesque and the foliage is wider like California poppy. If you give a rough location (county/city) I can do a more specific search on iNaturalist.

Do update with a flower photo once it flowers.

ApolloandDaphne · 07/05/2026 06:50

My plant app says it's Pheasants eye.

SpringHasSprungTheGrassIsRiz · 07/05/2026 06:58

Not Cosmos, leaves aren't right, the other suggestions are interesting though. I'm in Warwickshire and it's arrived by itself. Quite the mystery!

iNaturalist thinks it's either Larkspur (Delphinium ajacis), or pineapple weed (Matricaria discoidea). Larkspur looks about right.

SpringHasSprungTheGrassIsRiz · 07/05/2026 09:21

Definitely not pineapple weed, but lurkspur looks interesting - I'd be happy with that!

I grow lots of California poppies, the foliage isn’t as dense, more airy

MyCottageGarden · 14/05/2026 20:45

That thick stem looks like Larkspur-like to me.

MyCottageGarden · 14/05/2026 20:48

If it is larkspur, be very very careful! It’s exceptionally toxic to both animals and humans. One leaf is enough to ☠️ a human.

SpringHasSprungTheGrassIsRiz · 14/05/2026 20:50

Oh crap. That would be typical!

Is it monkshood. If delphinium are so toxic why do they sell them.

Agapornis · 14/05/2026 23:16

It's only poisonous if you ingest it - not to touch. Unless you have an exceptionally stupid pet or child, it's not something to worry about. Treat them the same as foxgloves.

SpringHasSprungTheGrassIsRiz · 15/05/2026 06:40

Child has been thoroughly drilled in not eating anything in the garden that she doesn't know. Cat is exceptionally stupid, but she's on her own. I am looking forward to the flowers developing so that I can confirm for sure!

It has flowered! Propped up in a fennel. Pretty sure it is larkspur
