Clematis Armandii Appleblossom not flowering....

I have 2 Clematis Armandii Appleblossom and they were planted last May on a west facing fence. They have grown really well and cover my fence with fabulous foliage but have not flowered. The info card says they should flower early (april).

Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong?

i think they flower on the previous year's growth so next year, they should flower on the masses of foliage that has grown this year - presumably, there wasn't that much growth last year as it was the first year you planted it.

Thanks sis, looks like I am in for a spectacular show next year then!

yes, mine is just starting to flower this year (planted 2 years ago) - i was beginning to think i had a dud!

They just take a bit of time to get established. Am sure they will flower next year, esp in a sunny spot as they are.

I thought this was another 'do you like my girls' names choices' threads on first sight.

I planted a clematis thats growing splendidly through my cheap rubbishy fence. What will it look like over winter?

Hi, I may have the answer: April is when we had late frosts and snow, which (for example) removed all the buds from a massive wisteria I have as well as the magnolia. Clematis due to flower in May and June have flowered OK. I think you probably lost the buds to frost one night without really noticing, which is quite easy as the affected buds will just dry and disappear. Don't worry though, it should flower fine next year.

Charliecat - It depends on which type of clematis it is. Mine (armandii appleblossom) is evergreen so looks great all year round. I have another however which loses its leaves during the winter but I can't remember which type it is.
