How would you add whimsy to this door?

Photos pending.

This door is the focal point of my arch. No one uses it and there is a warehouse behind it. How can I make it look interesting on a tiny budget and very little artistic talent?

A couple of points:
The warehouse owner is fine with me doing stuff to it as long as I don’t ruin its structural integrity.

I can’t do anything about the fake grass, landlords choice.

Paint it?

AnyIdiot · 28/03/2026 14:52

I already have some dark green paint, but I feel it needs something else…

A garden mirror?

AnyIdiot · 28/03/2026 14:53

But if the general consensus is keep it simple, I will go with that.

A garden mirror?

But what shape?

Arched garden mirror

Cerialkiller · 28/03/2026 14:56

Grow a rose around it.
Hand paint some beading/architectural details on it.
Change the knob to something elvish/decorative

Cerialkiller · 28/03/2026 14:56

You could get a mirror with a cross of metal on it to make it look like a window?

SueBlime · 28/03/2026 15:03

Are outside mirrors risky to birds?

What are your artistic skills like @AnyIdiot ? I'm picturing a door opening to a path between trees/meadows/towards a beach/whatever floats your boat, all painted on.

damelza · 28/03/2026 15:08

I got stencils of huge sunflowers and painted them in. They look great, door to shed is at end of garden so it didn't matter that I was not Leonardo da Vinci 😊

sittingonabeach · 28/03/2026 15:08

Door mural. You can buy stick on ones

bilbodog · 28/03/2026 15:12

An arch like the one you've already got and plant a climbing rose and lavender at the base.

ILoveDaffodills · 28/03/2026 15:32

I actually like the door. But if I didn't I'd probably paint it sky blue & put a trellis planter with jasmine in, in front of it.

presuming as it is into your garden it's not a fire exit, if it is I'd paint it & maybe put a couple of light hanging herb planters on it.

AnyIdiot · 28/03/2026 15:34

Stencils are a genius idea. I would love to paint something but I am not artistic at all. Keep the ideas coming and roll on spring. Need a warm day to get painting.

Paint it black, paint a letter box on it, screw on big knob on it and paint on a number 10.

A bit like this picture

Jasmine, climbing rose or honeysuckle in a pot to the left of it, paint it and mirror, the arched one linked above is nice. Type in secret garden door in Google for some ideas

DeedlessIndeed · 28/03/2026 15:59

I wouldn't bother painting it. You'll have to sand and re-paint in the future to keep it looking good, even with outside paint.

Also, garden mirrors are terrible for birds, so I would avoid.

In my opinion I would add an antique style brass nob, to make it look better as a door. I would then soften with plants. Nothing you can do about the awful plastic grass, but distract with two large planters either size that could accommodate some decent sized plants.

Gatekeeper · 28/03/2026 16:10

I would stain the wood a uniform slightly darker wood colour then wax it. I'd add heavy iron hinges https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1534361790/tee-penny-end-rustic-antique-iron-hand?ref=elp_anchor_listing&frs=1&bes=1
and a matching knob. Round the outside I would put a wooden arch and grow a climbing rose round it

Aparecium · 28/03/2026 16:12

Are you allowed to attach things to it? If so, how about some large gothic hinges and door knocker, and an arch with an evergreen growing over it?

BitOutOfPractice · 28/03/2026 16:15

I think that door simply needs replacing. It’s rotten, already been patched and repaired many times and looks like a security risk to me.

but in the absense of that, a jolly colour and some nice ironmongery would help.

This would be great. I'd use your dark green paint too, and add beading so it has those 4 rectangles on it (like No. 10 door above!!) The brickwork above it is lovely though so make sure the arch is tall enough so it doesn't cover that.

Flippityfloppop · 28/03/2026 16:29

I saw an arched mirror for about £12 in home bargains the other day!

gettingwhere · 28/03/2026 18:09

I would put lovely climbing plants in the flower beds at the end of the garden and let them just cover it all or grow around it randomly.
garrya elliptica is a plant I have always wanted to grow somewhere like that. Or I have a climbing rose called Gertrude jekyll which is amazing. I am thinking of putting a hydrangea semannii into my garden where different climbers have failed to grow, I think they’re evergreen and are meant to grow quite fast. For the latter two you would need a trellis on the wall, not sure about the first.
So I vote for climbing plants, and solar powered fairy lights when they’re done, maybe wind chimes if you want to piss your neighbours off! I spent a lot of time painting a horrible wall before growing climbers on it, was kind of pointless painting it because you couldn’t see it once they grew, but OTOH there is an area where the plants have done badly (yes, you, star jasmine, and you, honeysuckle) and at least the wall looks ok.
