Soil for climber one foot away from trellis. Doable?

I had this trellis put up to replace one that was there decades ago - and now I realise that right underneath is concrete, and the available soil only starts about a foot - or 30cm - away from the wall. (The grass of the lawn is where the soil starts.)

Now, decades ago at this family home there was a clematis growing up here, before everything got wiped out through neglect or honey fungus. It came out of the soil and certainly not from a planter box.

Is it normal to grow a clematis - or a David Austin climbing rose - up a trellis even if it is planted a foot away from the actual trellis?

I had a passion flower that grew over EVERYTHING in my garden and then spread to the neighbours washing line over the fence. So yes, possible with a vigorous plant.
The main factor would be if it would be too large in relation to the rest of the garden? My garden is small, so even a normal rose bush looks oversized.
I have a trellis with a foot of gravel in front and then slabs. I’ve put pots with climbers that get out of control if left in a bed.

Yes, that will be fine. Climbers are normally sold with a bamboo cane anyway, so you just plant it at a diagonal angle leaning towards the trellis, and attach the top of the cane to the trellis to keep it stable while it establishes itself.

If you want clematis, you need to provide shade at the roots somehow as they don't like to get them hot and baked in the sun. Maybe plant some evergreen plant as ground cover at the base of it.

Yes no problem at all with lots of perennial climbers- star Jasmine, passiflora, clematis etc. Just tie it to a bamboo cane at first.

Or even some annual ones - morning glory grows very fast from seed and would reach that trellis in no time at all.

Yes. In fact it's recommended! See here RHS

Thanks everyone! I will try to combine a white rose with a clematis, not sure if that's a good idea but will give it a try.

Id try a jasmine polyanthum, mine keeps it's leaves and looks good all winter, lovely fragrant flowers in May. . Some climbers prefer to be pot bound, could you put a planter at the base of the trellis?

Could this blend in with a white climber rose like David Austin's Iceberg? I will look myself, of course.
