Scented easy rose for over pet grave clay soil

I’d be grateful for any suggestions. Buried the pet a good 2+ foot down. Pretty heavy clay. I would like to plant a rose or I suppose flowering shrub of some kind over the top, but am boggled by the websites. Ideally something I don’t need to do too much to.
I can improve the top layer of the soil, it also still has lots of pebbles. It’s south facing but semi shaded I think (it’s by a tree and is next to a neighbours fairly large & encroaching shrub).
it might end up being part of a not exactly hedge along that boundary, I don’t really have a plan yet.

any thoughts would be welcome

This is a list of plants that do well on clay, and includes some advice on rose types.
One thing I would say is that roses tend to need some gardening skill, like pruning, whereas one of the other suggestions- the philadelphus - is kind of a plant you can just plant and forget about. It's also very lovely and has a great fragrance. So I'd go with that.
Sorry for the loss of your pet, @Telemichus . https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/trials-awards/using-award-winning-plants/10-award-winning-plants-for-clay-soil

It also stays reasonably small and manageable.

Thank you so much! We have a Philadelphus which is enormous, & I am slowly hacking back, but I do love the scent. I am a hack pruner, if they survive then fine, and I am learning to set reminders when to do it.
i will peruse the link.

Oh it's interesting that your philadelphus is so successful, it must really like the clay!
I've grown them but not on clay.
Far as I know roses usually do well on clay so maybe that's the answer? I'm definitely no rose expert.
Interestingly I've just recently moved into a house where the garden seems to be mostly heavy clay so I'm very much looking into it at the moment. There's a house up the road with a big euphorbia in the front so I think they might do well but of course they're not fragrant. And there's a hydrangea in our garden but that isn't either. Oh just remembered there's a honeysuckle too! Not a lot else so far.

Olivia Austin is lovely, prolific and easy.

My soil is clay-based. Roses with a lovely scent that have done good here are Gabriel Oak and The Generous Gardner - both from David Austin.

Am sorry for the loss of your pet. Planting something beautiful for them is a lovely idea, have done it here and, after time, it’s definitely a soothing connection to tend to the chosen plant over the years.
