I'm quite new to gardening but last year grew my own plants from seed for the first time (with mixed success!). This year I've sowed my sweetpeas and bought my cosmos and some scabious to plant. I find it so exciting growing them and checking each day!

Which seeds are you all feeling most excited for and any recommendations? I learnt the hard way last year the art of labelling them!

Nasturtium because they're easy, and big enough to handle. Recommended for kids for these reasons. The flowers are also lovely (and edible). They can go straight in the ground, and if you're lucky they seed themselves, though are annuals.

Verbena, because I love them. And sunflowers, always so cheerful.

I also have some poppies, some cornflowers and some night stocks, and my neighbour gave me some hollyhock seeds last summer. Not quite warm enough to sow them around here yet, planning to do them in April.

Anything that is edible.
I feel it’s a win-win, coz I get the joy of growing, plus the health benefits of whatever I’ve grown.

I am the same — if I can’t eat it, I don’t plant it — my shrubs are rosemary and lavender, my trees are all nut or fruit trees, I’ve discovered that hosta are edible and planted a fern popular in North America that is edible as well (Ostrich Ferns in the spring = steamed fiddleheads with butter and vinegar — divine.)

Are you growing anything edible that is unusual?

Mangelwurzel and trombochino.

I’m excited for my orange brugmansia seedlings, I’ve been struggling with them in the past but I’ve got four strong seedlings so 🤞for big healthy plants.

I’ve gone a bit bonkers and have loads of seedlings growing in my propagators and outside - Ricinus, amaranth, aubrieta, lobelia, cobaea, cleome, stocks, sweet peas, coleus, Mimulus, nicotianas, basil, echeveria, aloe, tagetes. Some of them I’ve planted before, some are new this year. I’ve had a few duds as well - notably Cyperus papyripherus which just refused to germinate at all. It’s going to be a year of experimenting.

Thanks for your post.
i should add that I am also interested in growing ineble flowers if they can be useful as a companion plant tithe fruit or veg yhat I’m trying to protect.
Also there are certain flowers that deter slugs.
im not sure if you’d call my latest success as unusual, but I’d never grown Jerusalem Artichokes previously, so that was interesting.
i bought fifteen tubers (if that’s what they are called) from eBay, planted them , and some months later, was rewarded with loads of JA underground.
I am also interested in the healtbenefits of herbs and weeds if they are edible, such as dandelion, chickweed, nettles plantain… oh gosh too many to think of.
i also like growing microgreens, tho that’s more of a kitchen windowsill venture.
Also the thing I also found rewarding, is making my own compost from kitchen scraps.
Years ago when I had an older type composter, my oh said I should jut get rid of the composter and whatever was in it, coz he’s only ever seen the top of the waste which was grass cuttings.
So I said no way, and showed him the rich compost at the bottom half of the composter, and he was amazed and voted to keep the composter !!
Love my edibles, and if I had more room, I’d be taking on a full time job with it 🤭
Good luck with yours, Pixie.
