A continuation thread.

Thank you to MereDintOfPandiculation for threads 1 through 6. We wouldn't have built this lovely gardening community without you.

No gardening job is too small or too big to tell us about.

Spring is springing into action, let's get mucky.

Three years ago the builders working next door ripped out a very old massive Clematis Montana that had been on our joint fence, it was beautiful and in spring looked like a waterfall of gorgeous pink flowers. Lots of little birds were in it, wrens, sparrows, blue tits, I was really upset when the shrub went and I lost the birds.

I planted my own clematis to fill the massive loss and it's really starting to get going. This past week I have put peanut feeders into my tree and I am thrilled to say that I now have blue tits coming in each day, plus they are often on one of the nest boxes on the fence so I may be lucky enough to get them nesting this year.

I've also seen a wren a couple of times plus the robin is back more often too and my pair of blackbirds are now daily visitors.

Not specifically about gardening but after two years of very few birds, this is a lovely sign I'm getting them back. 😊

The NDNs builders did similar.

Our late neighbours were called John and Marion, and when Marion passed away, John planted a maid Marion rose and he gave that rose bush so much attention, it had the most beautiful long lasting blooms and smelled really fragrant.

One day I looked out of the window to see what the racket was and new NDN had the garden completely ripped out. I ran outside in my nighty and asked where the rose bush was because I really wanted to save it but it was already at the bottom of the skip with about 8 tonnes of dirt on top of it.

He had such a lovely garden and we had alsorts of wildlife visit because of him. He had a pond so we used to get visited by some sort of crane(? Not a bird person so not entirely sure, big bird, long legs, long pointy beak).

Now NDNs garden is all concrete slabs. Not a blade of grass in sight.

Other NDN does have a nice garden, but he's the bamboo culprit. He also keeps fancy pigeons and whilst they're beautiful to look at, they're not wildlife. The only wildlife he seems to bring in is hungry rats after his bird feed.

I can't blame new NDN entirely, on the field opposite us, a few miles down there's a huge fishing pond but over the decades between us and the pond there's been an industrial park thrown up, and a huge glass recycling facility that absolutely stinks and just draws in loads of gulls for the waste.

We also see a lot of bats in the summer but next door but one have put loads of those owl shaped, ultra sonic cat scares in their garden that go off when the wind blows. It's at a frequency that they can't hear but DS and I can still hear it, and since then there's been a marked reduction in the levels of bat activity too which is a shame because there was no greater tiny pleasure than sitting outside on a warm summer dusk and seeing the bats flitter around.

Builders and some neighbours ... 🙄🙄🙄

If your SIL happens to see any more I'd be ever so grateful for a nudge. I'd frame it to my family as a cultural trip and a fancy brunch... to the garden centre.

Happy to nudge when appropriate :)

Woohoo! My local nursery and garden centre too!
👋🏻
p,s. West Kington are open to the public on certain weekends, they’re literally a couple of miles from me.

Edited

Didn't know that, thanks! I will find out which weekends if I can

Hello gardeners !
who can advise me how to get a tangled common jasmine to flower?
it’s in a sunny spot but I admit I probably just bunged it in and neglected it,
I gave it a cut end of the summer, now it’s putting out new leaves and there are all the frost damaged leaves to come off. Is the new growth where it will flower from and can I still reduce it a bit more now? Thanks

I think jasmine is a lot like wisteria, the new growth will produce flowers, and light pruning is done after it's finished flowering and heavy pruning is done in the dormant season.

If you do a heavy prune now you'll risk it not flowering this year and it might get a bit of shock as it's coming out of dormancy.

I've planted sunflower seeds with my children today.
And a J Parker’s catalogue arrived this week so I’ve been musing. Does anyone have any recommendations for a shrub that likes damp soil? There’s a strip that runs N-S about 6ft wide between my shed (which will be replaced with a greenhouse at some point) and the fence which has been squelchy this winter and I’m not quite sure what to do with it.

Took last years garden trimmings to the dump today, got told off for wearing crocs by the chap who works there.

Popped back to b&m and picked up a 6 cell tray of poppies to go in wkth the volunteer foxgloves for this year.

The clear lacquer spray paint arrived so when the kids paint their plant pots I can seal the paint in, and then they'll be sowing their strawberry seeds in.

I'm definitely not utilising child labour for our small PYO strawberry farm

B and m are pretty good - must take a look thanks for the tip.

Not really gardening but potting bench assembled and tool racks up in shed at the allotment. Blind also up in window so shed is done.

I’m in a dither but seriously considering planting out all the new dahlia tubers in the dahlia bed tomorrow? Are we going to be too early?

Weeded the front beds and area around laburnum tree. Planted hanging basket. Did some pruning. Couldn't cut grass as ground too wet.

Back garden next. Lots to do.

Sunday night is Plant Night in this house.

My outdoor pots didn't need watered, I gave them a good soak a few days ago when I was out in the garden doing a few jobs.

But I gave my cactii (one of which is starting to bud) their first watering of the season. I'll give them their first feed next month I think.

I noticed my terrarium had a lot of condensation so I left it open for a few hours today.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 08/03/2026 18:51

The kids have been, the plant pots are painted and tomorrow I'll be sealing it with the clear lacquer. DS decided to just paint the inside of his plant pot and then lost interest so left me and the girls to it.

DB has gone away for work for a bit but has asked if I'll kindly save some strawberry and sunflower seeds for when he is back home.

I've also sowed the idea, pardon the pun, that he plants some chilli seeds because he's going to be working away again and I think I could definitely pull his leg on April 1st with a fully cooked chilli plant from the supermarket.

I took lots of Salvia cuttings/runners and potted 23 of them up, not sure what I will do with all of them!

WearyAuldWumman · 08/03/2026 19:54

Not really in the garden - planted some seeds on a windowsill.

Castlerigg · 08/03/2026 20:24

We’ve had nice weather this weekend, so I’ve done loads in the garden. I dug out some of the mat of old roots in the raised bed at the front, and then went to the garden centre. Primarily to buy a moss pole for my monstera - failed in that mission as they only had two sizes: Not quite big enough, or ridiculously massive. So I’ll make do with some old canes for now.

I did get herb plants for my herb garden. I had hoped to get those in the ground today, but priorities changed when DP brought round his ladders that I’d asked to borrow, so that I could prune the pear trees. They had lots and lots of vertical branches that added a lot of height, so I wanted to reduce them to encourage fruiting lower down, where I can actually get to them.

I feel like I’ve spent so much time stripping back ivy, pulling out weeds, and pruning the pear trees, that all the work I’ve done, whilst necessary, has been quite destructive. I really wanted to do something positive in the garden this weekend, so this afternoon I planted my lovely little Acer, that I’ve had for a couple of years in a pot. It’s tucked partly behind the camellia, so it’ll get a bit of shade and a bit of sun, and then more sun once the camellia has finished flowering and I can cut it back.

PorkPieForStarters · 08/03/2026 20:48

I cleared out 6 sacks of garden rubbish and did a tip run, then jet-washed all the patio and walkways - so satisfying but I'll have to wait till tomorrow to appreciate it in daylight!
It looks like I'm going to need to repoint between the flags so that's a job for this spring/summer.

I'm trying to wait until the risk of frost has passed, and see what's growing, before buying any new plants. I have some tricky areas to fill and struggle to keep things alive and happy there so my next step is to do some research and come up with a plan (and avoid garden centres in the meantime because I'm weak).

Ooh that sounds like a good idea @Isabelle70
I planted a Salvia ‘Hot Lips’ last year in honour of Loretta Swit and it put on a spectacular display right up until the first frost.
I hadn’t thought about cuttings but I shall give that a go this week. A few more dotted around would be lovely.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 09/03/2026 11:05

I've been out and coated the plant pots to seal in the art. The children will not be disappointed and now there'll be no squabbling over who's strawberries are who's.

I did get the lacquer on my only pair of glasses with transitions lenses though, guh.

I also looked over the veg beds and the 2 beds I've recently de-weeded have become re-weeded, and the 2 I've yet to do have ladybird activity and/or more surprise garlic.

I have no idea where it's come from, I'm sure I pulled it all up last year and I haven't planted any for a good 3 years now. We're still using the garlic I pulled up last year.

I'm waiting for the daffodils that I got earlier in the week to finish flowering before I plant them, and I'm waiting for my neighbour across the road to make himself busy before I dare go out front to plant the poppies.

My conservatory/potting shed is currently being used to store some of my cousins furniture for her new house, but the house move has been pushed back a few more weeks, so I've told her she needs to make sure her stuffs moved before mother's day when I do my sowing, or it'll get covered in compost. She thinks I'm joking, but she'll not be thinking that when she's got snapdragons growing out of her duvet.

Last year I made the mistake of sowing them with the windows and doors open. Wind blew them everywhere and the seeds are so tiny I couldn't see where they all went. We ended up with snapdragons in our tomatoes, radishes, and marigolds. There's a very high chance she could end up with some growing out of her soft furnishings.

I've also just perused the lemon tree, I've got 8 lemons so far starting and 23 more flowers. Finally after all these years it's giving me something back and not being such a freeloader.

@Jimmyneutronsforehead nice pots! They will love them

we have been at the allotment today to get some peace and MH time as we had a tricky weekend.

Today was digging out the bindweed around the rhubarb and weeding the garlic bed and digging over the bed ready for the early potatoes tomorrow. Blind went up in the shed yesterday and hooks etc and the potting bench. Normally Harry comes to say hi and pick up our dog up bits. Today we had two Harrys very close together looking over what we were doing!

There's something missing from your shed... a DeWalt kettle. That shed is begging to have a fresh made cup of tea in it.

OP posts:
Jimmyneutronsforehead · 09/03/2026 18:31

DP has just informed me it's not DeWalt, it's Makita. I clearly am not a power tool enthusiast like he is.

OP posts:
Agapornis · 09/03/2026 23:40

Haha, I immediately went to look it up ("DeWalt do a kettle?!") and got spammed with Makita ones. Looks very sturdy, I quite like it. If I ever feel like spending £150 very frivolously, I think I might get myself one.

I already have two Makita batteries for my drill, so it would keep me in tea for a few days if there was ever a bad power outage/apocalypse.

No DIY done today, alas.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 10/03/2026 00:00

Apparently I should have known it was a Makita, DP says, because he suggested one to me 450 sleep cycles ago once when I was busy doing something else.

I'm loath to say they look a good idea now because he'll get a massive ego boost and his hat won't fit him anymore if his head gets any bigger.
