A continuation thread.

Thank you to MereDintOfPandiculation for threads 1 through 6. We wouldn't have built this lovely gardening community without you.

No gardening job is too small or too big to tell us about.

Spring is springing into action, let's get mucky.

I need a trip to B&M. Home bargains had some azaleas but they were a bit sparse so I didn’t buy.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 27/03/2026 12:53

I went to ASDA today and picked up some multi-sown pots of sweet peas in their 3 for £5 range.

On the way home the sun poked out so thought I'd have had chance to get them planted up but as soon as we got back the clouds came back over and my knees are aching now so perhaps the weatherman will be nice enough to predict some good weather soon.

Mine are in! I’ve planted the Bowles mauve and a few other things too. I’ve also been brave and moved a peony. Well, it had been in a pot so I’ve planted it in a bed now. Hope it likes it because it was beautiful last year.

DameProfessorIDareSay · 27/03/2026 14:19

Pelargoniums are now safely potted. Looking at what is happening in the greenhouse, my peony is coming up great guns and the dahlias are bursting into life (I leave all these in their pots to overwinter in the unheated greenhouse; they don’t seem to mind).
Some greenery showing on some old pelargoniums, so they need the dead stuff cutting back and a bit of a feed.

Looking at the weather forecast, the only 0C showing overnight is for this weekend and then we are at a minimum of 4C after that. I am only a mile from the coast and our last frost is usually beginning of April so that looks about right.

By mid-April I can usually bung everything outside apart from chillies and toms which stay in the greenhouse after I have given it a spring clean.

This weekend I need to deadhead the primroses and cyclamen to get a last bloom out of them, and pot up some pansies around the mini conifers in pots.
Oh, and buy some more tomato seeds; one of the packets I got from the seed library was completely empty! So I still need some cherry toms.

I was hoping to get in the garden but I'm out for most of the day so I'm crossing fingers that I can tomorrow. Weather is gorgeous, brilliant blue sky, sunshine but breezy and quite cold.

I want to pot up the sweet peas into the large pot, not sure whether to put them out or keep them in for a bit longer, I'm way down south so I would hope that I am fairly safe if I do.

My dahlias are doing absolutely nothing, I think I probably won't get anything from them this year which is a shame as one, Firepot, was gorgeous and has been for the past three years.

I'm a bit hit and miss with them unfortunately. I'll leave them where they are and see if anything happens before I dump them in the compost bin.

Zebracat · 28/03/2026 12:40

I’ve just had a seedling disaster. I always start my tomatoes in our (freshly decorated) guest bedroom, but we have a friend coming to look after our dog while we go away. I thought I’d bring the tomatoes downstairs and didn’t realise the tray was full of smelly brown water, clearly I’ve been overwatering. Got it all over the curtains, walls, bed , pile of clean bedding, carpet, rug and me. Cleaning for hours and 2 lots of washing, and that’s hoping that the spot washes of the curtains and rug work. Something always goes wrong when I grow from seed.
I've got no time now to tidy the garden and prep it for a week of neglect. My Dh tried to comfort me by saying he expects it’s happened to Monty too. But I think if it did he would have a tantrum and someone else would sort it.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 28/03/2026 15:07

I've just filled some pots and seed snails and stuck some of my seeds in to discover a massive cluster of slug eggs in my compost.

So now I don't know if I've planted my seeds in slugs but I suspect I have given I wasn't wearing my glasses.

I’ve just planted two dahlia tubers into big pots today, I don’t normally have great luck with dahlias but I will keep trying 🙈😂

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 28/03/2026 16:06

I never have luck with dahlia tubers but I do manage alright with dahlias from seed. I think it's just too wet and boggy round here for tubers, by the time it's time to dig them up and over winter them they're rotten, and that's if they take at all.

It would appear that only 2 of my 6 new semperviviums survived their first winter. One has thrown up chicks already though.

Placestogo · 28/03/2026 17:08

Ive received my order of semperviviums, will plant them tomorrow.
today i focused on my house plants, repotting several, offering new growth to neighbours (aloe vera, silver bay chinese evergreen and peace lily) and receiving three cuttings of red and green coleus!

Our dahlias are still in storage and we are planting them into beds in April. Did you leave them in the ground all winter? Or protect them with hay or straw?

Liquoricethyme · 28/03/2026 18:31

We are back from our whole day out at a college on a ‘grow your own’ course. It was bloody marvellous 9 people and 1 instructor. I have to say it was an amazing well run course and a lovely day out / there was one person (M) who turned up over an hour late and proceeded to tell anyone how much he knew (more then the course instructor apparently) I asked him why he was doing to course - and he said ‘to get a certificate’ I have to say the course instructor handled him extremely well and cleared knew x100 more than him but was graceful etc but we gave him a wide berth etc at lunchtime for the afternoon I wasn’t in his group DH was and said he didn’t say much. But all in all it was a brilliant course and I feel I know so much more than I have learnt from any book.

Isabelle70 · 28/03/2026 19:04

I have sown 144 cosmos seeds and the puppy then trampled 2 trays before l managed to puppy proof them!
Also potted on 4 rose cuttings that have taken from last year into bigger pots.
Tomorrow the lawn mowing got get a mow.

Castlerigg · 28/03/2026 19:45

The weather has been ridiculous today, alternating pouring rain and bright sun, so I’ve been in and out all day. I’ve loaded some ivy into tote bags for taking away to burn, planted some seeds in trays inside, did some weeding at the front, and planted some violas from a tray I got for about £1 at Tesco.

WearyAuldWumman · 28/03/2026 20:06

Very cold here today.

Did a bit of weeding and scattered some flower seeds.

ismiledather · 28/03/2026 21:38

@zebracatone of my children once knocked strawberry Nesquick all over a basket of clean, ironed washing. That was bad enough. Sorry you had all that clean up to do. A real test of patience.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 28/03/2026 22:29

My usual issue with dahlias is the slugs and snails seem to love them but I’m always optimistic that this year will be different 🙈😂

I’ve sorted some houseplant cuttings today as well, I like making new houseplants.

They are in pots in the garage, I don't plant them in the garden as they get eaten.

Myblueclematis · 29/03/2026 10:19

The £2 mini tomato greenhouse I bought in Poundland last week has four sprouting seeds. Yesterday there was nothing so I moved the container into the hall where it gets a lot more light and this morning four small seedlings.

Hopefully, there will be more of them in the next few days so if I get them into pots successfully later on, I can pass them on to friends.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 29/03/2026 10:24

I’ve got a tiny little greenhouse on my garden table with sunflowers and cosmos seedlings in, I’m hoping it’s not too cold for them as it’s flipping freezing here today.

Maggiethecat · 29/03/2026 10:49

Myblueclematis · 29/03/2026 10:17

Same here, covered in wood chip.

Some are looking a bit withered but I’ll soon start potting them up in small pots to start them off until big enough to plant out when warmer.

Last year they did very well so hoping they’ll survive the expected slugageddon this year.

Positivepositron · 29/03/2026 11:01

DH and DS rebuilt a fence at the end of the garden and had fun building a scarecrow.
I was ill so didn't help and now it's pouring down.
I managed to get some night scented stock seeds out before the rain came.

Positivepositron · 29/03/2026 11:03

I'm not sure any of the nasturtium seedlings I planted indoors and transplanted out will survive. I will sow some outdoors next week and they'll hopefully do better.
Also will plant some poppies and sunflowers inside next week.

Placestogo · 29/03/2026 11:46

@Positivepositron i usually plant my nasturtium from seeds directly into the soil. I find they grow fine despite neglect. And they are not attractive to slugs so the garden is pretty safe for them. Are you worried they might be too cold? Mine tend to last until nov/dec so they are quite robust as well. Fingers crossed your seedlings survive. Saying i planted three tiny tomatoes outside and they died last week… 😭

ive plated my sempervivums and my sebum. I added some spare sempervivum on the “live roof” of the garden shed. It is long dead and apart from the sycamore seedlings, nothing seems to sur ive there… lets see…
Ive planted 3 budleia and hopefully will have a soft row of them come summer. Not sure how it will look next winter though??
My peonies are growing taller everyday. The ones are the front of the house (sunny in themorning) already have flowers forming. The one in the back garden is all leaves for now. I will have to split it in theautumn as it is getting far too big for its own good!

i seem to have quite a few forget me nots popping up in the garden. What do you do with them? Ive relocated one.
But i also have a massive one that is begging to be split and maybe somewhere else. I worry if i start doing this they ight start taking over the garden…
