My David Austin New Dawn rose has done sfa since I’ve had it in 18 months

What am I doing wrong? All my other DA roses have thrived and grown straight from planting.

me too! I bought 6 DA roses 3 or 4 years ago and they’ve all done sfa except 1 which died. They just look spindly and crap in a row and I have no idea why because I’ve tended them as per instructions. They do bloom but the branches are weedy and lack foliage so they really are awful looking.

Were they all New Dawn?

To be fair all my other DA roses have done very well.

Do you feed and prune at the right times? That said I’ve done all the normal feeding ( no pruning because there is no new growth to speak of to prune ) with New Dawn but she’s just sulking .

Could it have been planted where there was a rose before ? Roses can fail to thrive or die if so. Does it have any growth starting at all ?

Yeah there’s a bit of new growth but it’s tiny.

Well I’m definitely not green fingered but I have fed and pruned carefully. They’re not new dawn, all different ones. And all are very sad. I do think my soil is bad tbf but I hoped feeding would overcome that.

New Dawn isn't a David Austin rose. It's classed as a modern climber which is now nearly 100 years old! Describe how and where you planted it.

Victoriawould24 · 25/02/2026 11:32

David Austin also have a lifetime guarantee on their roses, I’m not sure how it works but I’m sure they would give you direct advice.

It isn't a lifetime guarantee, it's a 5 year guarantee.
I used it last year as one of the bare roots I'd put in a few months previously died and I could choose refund or replacement.

I agree if you contact them they will advise you what to do.

I have never had a David Austin rose fail. In fact I was just flicking through this year’s catalogue wondering which ones I could squeeze in!

My last purchase was alberic barbier (I already have two more of these) in November and it already has lots of growth on it.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 25/02/2026 11:56

Ive had mixed success with DA. Bought about 15 roses 4-5 years ago. 1/3 failed including 2 standards. Some have done brilliantly eg Clare Austin. I am not a good gardener, but even so.

Victoriawould24 · 25/02/2026 17:04

@Sweetiedarling7the catalogue is very dangerous they all look so beautiful.
I have Lady of Shallot and Olivia Rose Austin in my basket.
@ExOptimistthanks for the correction, I suppose 5 years is still pretty decent.

My new dawn rose did nothing so I dug it up. Told it I was going to chuck it and then at the last minute planted it in a new space by my pergola.

It got the message, stopped sulking and now flowers beautifully every year.

I haven’t either, this is my first fail from them. I have 5 others who have been amazing from the get go.😖

I have a New Dawn too that hasn't been great, so I might baby it this year and if no better replace it.

Yep I’m going to pamper it this summer and then thinking it might be given the heave ho after if no vigorous growth. Would be frustrating if this particular one just takes a few years to embed though.

@N0m0rerainI still think it’s worth you contacting DA for advice and if that fails a replacement/ refund.

My munstead wood took about three years but then thrived - it’s gorgeous now. The best rose I ever had that flowered from May to November and needed severe cutting to keep under control was Rosa Alan Titchmarsh

friskybivalves · 26/02/2026 08:44

You’re so lucky to have a Munstead Wood! I think they have retired it now? I would love one. I bought a bare root once but it didn’t take sadly.

Disaster. Missed them.

I think DA roses are always very poor for the cost
