Can I move daffodils that are already in flower?

We are having our front garden block paved next week. We currently have two borders which have daffodils planted. Some of the daffs are already in flower.

I'd like to save them if I can, but will they survive being lifted and transplanted into pots/troughs now? I don't really want to lose them if I can avoid it.

Or are they just destined to be buried under the driveway?

Give it a go…. People often plant out bulbs that have been grown in pots towards the end of the flowering season. You’ve got nothing to lose.

They will survive if you lift them and put them into troughs/pots with soil, though the flowers may not last. Just let them do their thing for the rest of the year and when the leaves start to die back, cut them off and store the bulbs over winter somewhere dry and dark. Bulbs are indestructible in my experience.

It’s not advisable but given the choice of paving over them or attempting a transplant, I would attempt to transplant them. Some may survive. I know how you feel. I always try and save a plant if I can. What might reduce the shock is to get a few planters and when the block paving is laid, put the daffodils in the planters placed out on the paving in roughly the same area they were growing. Having the same micro-clinate, hours of sun and so on will increase the chance of survival. Then when they are done flowering you can dig up the bulbs in summer and move them elsewhere for next spring.

They'll probably be fine but I'd cut the flower stalks off so the energy/water isn't going into those while they adjust.

Cut the flower stalks as late a possible and enjoy them in the house.

Move the bulbs into their new homes with the soil around all their roots- so dig under and take the soil under them aswell if you see what I mean.

Leave the leaves in place in their new homes until completely dead. Make sure new home is a sunny spot. I bet theyll survive just fine.

Put the flowers in a vase.
Dig up and move the bulbs and as much leaf and soil as you can - keep them watered if we have a dry spell (ha-ha!) you’ll probably find they are deeper than you planted them. They keep digging themselves lower with time!

Thank you all. I will definitely try transplanting them. I love daffodils and hate the idea of killing them off, if I can give them a chance.

I chuckled at the very idea of "a dry spell" @user8539762897 😅
