Growing a magnolia tree in a pot

Does anyone have any experience of growing a magnolia tree in a container/pot? We used to have a beautified magnolia tree in the front garden of my old house and I’d love to grow one in our new place but we have no soil, just raised beds around a small paved area, which have quite a few things growing in them already.

I would like to get rid of the laurel hedge we have growing in one raised bed but that feels like a big job so for now I was thinking of trying in a pot.

I had a magnolia stellata in a pot for a while, but it is much happier now it’s in the ground. So you could start with a massive pot, and then transplant it later when you’ve tackled the hedge?

Oh that’s really helpful thank you. Yes, that seems a nice idea. I feel like the hedge removal might need outside assistance but at least I can get cracking on the container myself!

I used to have a magnolia in a pot. It grew well, but stayed quite small. We tried to move it into the ground when it was about 3 years old & that killed it. I like to think it would have got bigger if we'd kept it in the pot

I'd love to know as well. I've got 2 in pots and I've never had magnolia before, I could plant one out front perhaps (south facing) but worried I'd kill it...

I have a magnolia 'fairy' in a pot. It was very small when i got it about two years ago and is doing well and loads of flower buds at the moment. I don't know if I'll keep it in the pot forever or put it in the ground. Nervous to see the above comment about transplanting killing them!

I bought an established one in the autumn and put it in the garden. Now we’re thinking of moving and I’m wondering whether it would be ok to put it back in a pot so I can take it with me!

I've got a magnolia stellata in a half barrel - probably about 6 years old. I feed it and it looks spectacular in bloom. It's also on wheels so I move it out of the way once it's stopped flowering as then it's pretty dull to be honest. Small garden so I move stuff in pots around a lot!

Oh that’s a great idea!
