Is it too early to start weeding, clearing beds?

Gardening newbie here. My garden has got some plants that need cutting right back (eg lavender, roses) and there are quite a lot of weeds in the beds. Is February too early to start tackling these?

It depends where you are in the country/world and what your forecast is, tbh. If you’ve got frost or snow forecast still, as we have where I am, you don’t want to be pruning as this will expose stems and they will be susceptible to damage in the colder weather. I’d say weeding is fine anytime. I’ve pottered around my garden in the small amount of dry weather we’ve had, just picking up leaves and pulling out dead stuff, which keeps on top of things till the nicer weather.

I would be weeding at the moment, but my garden is squelchy mud so I'm not. If the conditions are okay where you are, it's fine to weed.

I was looking at my garden today. It's a mess but it's raining, cold and horrible so it can just mulch itself!

It's not too early, but it probably is far too wet underfoot. Should be okay if you aren't treading on the soil or on the lawn though.

It is too early to cut back lavender. Roses, it's the perfect time (unless they are ramblers). But ideally, you'd do it all on a dry day (fat chance!), and you do want to be careful about compacting the soil if it is very wet.

Too early for cutting lavender, it's not very hardy against cold, so best to leave it until all chance of frosts is over and you can see new growth. It does look a bit scruffy this time of year but it will perk up soon.

Otherwise, it isn't too early but definitely too wet. If you have muddy clay soil you will just compact it and it will be like concrete once it dries out.

I completely understand though, it's hard to resist the urge this time of year. I'm champing at the bit to get out there gardening, and consoling myself with buying seeds and planning and looking at inspiration online.

Be patient... 🌱🌱🌱
