Where to put a bird feeder in a suburban garden?

We have a fairly standard 70s housing estate garden. Probably about 20’ x 15’. Fenced all around with the only trees being some neighbours leylanddi which they at least keep in good condition. We have borders all around with some established, large shrubs but they’re up against the fences and those fences often have squirrels scuttling along them or pigeons sat on them. The rest is lawn and that is regularly used by the children for ball games.
I would love to have a bird feeder in the garden but cannot think of where to put it. I’m also morally torn about whether to encourage more birds into the garden when we have a cat and sometimes get neighbouring cats strolling through too.
Any suggestions, both on location and the moral aspect?

Have a look at the rspb website for information.
i would put one close to one of the shrubs so the birds can perch in the branches before alighting the feeder. However, squirrels can jump from the fence onto the feeder so make sure it is far enough away to prevent this. You can get baffles to stop squirrels running up the poles. Squirrels are a big problem in my garden but I've just about got them sussed now!
