Putting trellis on top of fence- worth it?

We are getting a new fence put in- five feet high. We could get a one foot trellis put on top but I have no idea what I'd grow to make it worth it.
What in your experience grows well up along a fence to make it worth putting a trellis on top?

Yes - grow a honeysuckle for the lovely scent, a Virginia creeper for autumn colour, and a variegated ivy for winter cover.
these can all weave through each other too.

I wouldn't bother; the trellis always falls off or looks like it's leaning over.

The trellis would be inside the concrete posts

Definitely, yes. A trellis looks nice, even if there's nothing growing through it.

Trust me, if you don't, you'll always wish you had.

Ceanothus is gorgeous with blue flowers and lovely evergreen small leaves. Clematis has a huge variation in colour, type and flower season including evergreen armandii.

The rose Generous Gardener and Gertrude Jekyll provide lovely scented flowers.

Yes I would definitely have a trellis on the top.

I thought Ceanothus was just a bush/ shrub- not a climbing plant for a trellis

Yes 100%. Adds so much light to your garden and decoration. Even if you didn't grow anything it makes it look nice. If you do want to grow I'd highly recommend getting a really strong trellis either Garden Trellis company or Jacksons Fencing

A trellis-topped 5 foot fence looks less stark than a 6 foot closeboard fence, and gives you the option of getting the extra height for privacy by growing plants. The trellis does get a lot of wear with birds, squirrels and foxes sometimes causing damage. But a trellis is easy and cheaper to replace than a whole fence panel.

I've had good experience with star Jasmine and passionflower growing up to and sing the trellis. Also raspberries and tomatoes. All have needed wires on the fence part to get up to the trellis though.

We had 6 ft fencing all the way around in our old house,, it honestly looked like a compound, a couple of gun turrets wouldn’t have looked out of place . Get the trellis it will look a lot nicer, you’ll probably find something will grow up it by itself. Plant some clematis , jasmine, honeysuckle , wisteria, plant them all and see what grows best .

Yes I think we will do that. Just waiting for this non stop rain to finish before we tell them to do it.
