It's in the front garden and is too big for the space. I'd like to cut it back rather than remove it but not sure whether it's too late for that - as in if I cut it back, will it grow leafy and green again.

Not sure what it is or how to cut it. Thanks!

I think it's a hebe.

It's a type of hebe .. possibly Hebe Rakaiensis.
For pruning, the optimal time to trim is either early spring before the flower buds develop; or after flowering in summer or early autumn.
Cut back to a few inches above a leaf or bud. Don't cut into hard woody stems as they often won't regrow.

Definitely a Hebe. I've never had any success with them regrowing when I've cut them back hard but if you do, maybe treat it like a Lavender and don't cut back into the brown at the bottom. Leave at least a couple of leaves to see if it gets going again.

You could maybe prune off anything growing sideways, so it doesn't take up so much room. Hebe isn't particularly hardy, and can sometimes kick the bucket in prolonged freezing winter weather.
