Anyone else really missing their garden?!

A bit of a pity post but I am really missing pottering around my garden. Other than occasionally raking the leaves, there isn’t much to do right now. Have I completely lost the plot or are there other mnetters yearning for their garden. My houseplants are also struggling.

Me!!!

Redrosesposies · 01/01/2026 23:03

Yes me. I keep wandering around it and planning what's being dug up/moved this year. Can't wait to get going again.

Curver · 01/01/2026 23:04

I am considering swapping two of my roses. I’ve got a Gertrude Jekyll which is a beast in a pot. Would probably do better in the ground. I could swap it with the beautiful Desdemona but I can’t make my mind up!

Yes I am!! I had a wistful mooch around out there yesterday but it was all cold and wet and dead and horrible. I did observe a couple of daffodil shoots emerging which was promising - I can’t wait to see those first new shoots on all the bits I planted this year!!!

I do this too. There’s nothing I can do that scratches the itch enough. Can’t wait for the bulbs to show up!

Yes! And ours is still so waterlogged that I can't even have a wander around apart from the top end. Lots of bulbs starting to emerge though but be ready for the slugs attacking the buds! Angry

NeverOneBiscuit · 02/01/2026 00:39

Yes. I managed some leaf raking, & a bit of weeding and trimming earlier this week - loved it. Also weeded some pots.

Might try again this weekend but the forecast is possibly snow!

SpinelessBastardsAll · 02/01/2026 01:48

Same, I keep standing at the window for ages staring at it.

SarahAndQuack · 05/01/2026 20:48

I'm the opposite - I've got tons to do but I have been crap at getting out there! I did do some work in my mum's garden recently and that was very nice, but I really need to stop being so bloody useless and go look after mine.

Now if you asked me was I missing it being, ooh, maybe a balmy 12 degrees to work in ...

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 05/01/2026 20:55

Our garden is now frozen solid. Can't do anything at all out there at the moment, but it actually looks quite nice with the light covering of snow we've had.

Nannyfannybanny · 05/01/2026 20:56

We've got 200 ft, 4 greenhouses..a couple of border collies. So there's always something to do..at the moment it's frosty, but DH cuts the grass most of the year, collects leaves, tidied up. He's done the winter pruning of the fruit trees recently. The daffodils and irises are quite high.. I've got autumn sown sweet peas which need pinching out. I check the greenhouses daily. One is full of citrus.House plants are doing fine, there's a lot of them in every room. Probably 20 orchids,a lot in flower, various hanging plants, all need watering weekly. I sow my tomatoes and peppers at the end of January. The veg plot needs checking daily, making sure the onions and garlic are still netted and that nextdoors damn cat hasn't left any presents!

Koulibiak · 06/01/2026 14:00

I miss it too. I’ve started sowing seeds in propagators, and preparing some corms that need heat to get started. This should keep me entertained for a few weeks until it’s time for the dahlias and cannas to wake up.

Rocknrollstar · 06/01/2026 14:29

I am missing sitting on my patio with a G n T and a good book.

CandlelitKitchen · 06/01/2026 15:11

I've been coppicing hazel this week and am moving on to hedge trimming next and then tidying up my midden of a shed. Hoping to build more compost pens too over the coming weeks.

The thing that really keeps my heart and feet in the garden at this time of year is feeding and watering the birds. The garden here might be sleeping but it's alive with birds and, not so happily, squirrels.

Greedybilly · 06/01/2026 21:36

Same it's a crap hobby in Jan/Feb. Miss my allotment too.

Nourishinghandcream · 18/01/2026 19:03

Had a wander around the garden this weekend thinking about what new plants I can buy in the spring and where to put them.
Also trying to decide where to put our Celebration Rose which needs to go into the ground (currently in a huge, ugly pot).

Bought a couple of water butts on Saturday which will collect from the garage roof, currently we only collect from the shed roof and the complete lack of rain meant they emptied very quickly last spring.
We have a huge roof on the house that cold serve multiple water butts but unfortunately, all the downpipes are in positions that means the butts would be in the way.☹️

Chalatte · 19/01/2026 14:55

This is totally me
I have been dreaming about what to do in the garden and even go out on dry days to plan and lay down weed suppressing mats etc. Even sowed some parsley indoors!

I am on gardening sites all the time and cannot wait to get to march!

hattie43 · 19/01/2026 14:57

Yes I am , I can’t wait for a bit of warmth and light . I tried a bit of tidying up at the weekend but came in after about 40mins as just so cold .

Shinyandnew1 · 19/01/2026 14:58

Me too. I want to mow the lawn-I was doing it until well into November but it has still grown and it's annoying me! It's far too wet though.

I went out this morning and tidied up a bit (Cordyline seems to be shedding every time it's windy!) and could see bulbs coming up which was lovely to see!

OperationalSupport · 19/01/2026 15:03

I’ve moved house so I’ve got a new garden to contend with. Probably bitten off more than I can chew really. But we built some raised beds this weekend to grow soft fruit/veggies so now I need to order soil to fill them.
There’s leaves to rake/sweep, weeding to do in way too many flower beds, metres of lavender needing deadheading. And it keeps raining 😢

Id also like to think about a greenhouse for me, some fruit trees and swings/slide for the kids but I’m wary of rushing into it before we’ve even had one summer here.

Hotafternoon · 19/01/2026 15:07

Me!

I'm currently sitting in the dining room staring out at my very green but sodden garden. I have planted up some primroses and tete a tete daffs few days back into a tub and bought more to do another pot probably tomorrow as weather supposedly looking quite good. 🤞

NoYourNameChanged · 19/01/2026 15:10

Yes!! I’ve just moved house and had to leave my absolutely darling garden behind (v cottage, wildflower, secret garden vibes) and so it’s a double whammy. I worked so hard to get that one just so and now altho my new garden is easily four times the size and I’m very excited to get stuck in, I can do nothing for the minute because it’s so bloody wet and cold. Rubbish!! I’ll have to make do with abstract planning and ideas for the time being.

FrenchandSaunders · 19/01/2026 15:19

Yes I was thinking this yesterday. I think it's because we had such a beautiful summer last year ... we ate out in the garden almost every night for months. It was gorgeous.

SleepingisanArt · 19/01/2026 15:33

My spring bulbs are huge and the first grape hyacinth is in flower! The miniature standard rose has its first leaves. I have given the weeping silver birch its annual haircut (the worst bowl cut anyone has ever seen but it doesn't care). It already has loads of buds too. I have a lot of evergreens so the garden doesn't look sad in the winter. The anemones are still flowering, the winter flowering heathers look amazing (the bumble bees are enjoying them) and I'm looking forward to a spectacular display from my rhododendrons and azaleas. I don't rake leaves and have a lot of bugs for the birds as a result. They keep on top of the slugs for which I am very grateful.

The garden is on heavy clay so it's not fun at any time of the year if there's been rain! It's better now there isn't any lawn - just a lot of bark chips which are improving the texture of the soil as they rot down. I'm not a conventional gardener in any sense and have no idea what many of the plants are called...

PattiPatty · 19/01/2026 15:48

I had a wander yesterday and I have aconites in flower. It's all downhill from now.
