Watering plants in containers inside and out

beep beep beep it's remedial question time from me, a beginner!

I saw on Beechgrove Garden a woman who waters ALL her houseplants from the bottom up ie stands them in a saucer of water, she said it lessens the chances of pests.

And I read online that I'm best to water my new moss plants and airplants with rainwater or at least tap water that's sat for a while (presumably to let it warm up and the chlorine evaporate)

So these are my questions for both your indoor and outdoor container plants:

  1. Do you water top down or bottom up?
  2. What sort of water do you use?

Thanks

I water mine from the bottom as I had a recurring problem with fungus gnats from a new plant gifted to me (with bonus presents I wasn't expecting!). I don't have space in my garden for a water butt so I usually leave out a couple of old takeaway containers to collect rain and store it in a bottle. Otherwise it's water from my filter (so it's room temp). Seems to be working for me ok so far. I've only had houseplants for the last year or so, and they're still alive so I'm taking that as a win!

I'm a beginner also OP. I water mine using rainwater. I realise this sounds like a bit hippy/out there but we have a 5000L tank buried in the garden to collect rainwater from the roof. IF I didn't have that or can't be bothered to turn the pump on, I use water from the kitchen tap which hasn't been through the water softener but does go through a filter.

I do a mix of watering from top to bottom or the other way- depending on how big the tray underneath the plant is. I find the 'gardeners corner' website helpful for my plant/gardening specific questions too.

Tap water. I stand most of my houseplants on the draining board and drench them from the top, wait for them to drain and then put back in the saucer or decorative pot.

All the ones outside are watered from above with a hosepipe. I have way too many to faff about sitting them one by one in a saucer and waiting for half an hour. And yes, I do get the foliage all wet and no, it doesn't cause leaf damage if you water when the sun is out.
