I’ve grown a big lemon and orange plant but no fruit sadly , but thought I’d try an advocado . Have you had any success ?

It depends what you mean by ‘success’ … I’ve grown 2 this year which are not very attractive houseplants but ok as part of a group but I think it’s very unlikely to be able to grow plants which will fruit.

I have and one grew itself in the compost bin so I potted it up. I kept one as a houseplant for a while but it didn't last. My other is still in a pot outside. I think I ought to bring it in to overwinter in the conservatory. It suffered in an unheated greenhouse last winter.

There was an episode of Gardener's World where someone had one on an allotment in London with fruit. I assume it had a perfect microclimate.

I'd love to get fruit on mine but I'd imagine it would take at least a decade to be established enough plus mild enough winters not to kill it off.

I do! I planted it during the first lock down so it must be 5 years old now. Its highly unattractive. Its about 5ft tall now just one bare stick with about 8 or 9 large broad leaves limply hanging from the very top. But it has sentimental value so I keep watering it and it keeps plugging on lol

I've got two on my windowsill that I think are around 2 years old - they're 3ft tall now, but not very happy, 'cos they're above a radiator, so the leaves tend to dry out. They do better in the summer when the heating's not on. Not expecting fruit - it was just an experiment, really.

I currently have a couple of citrus, an avocado and loquats in pots. I've never got an avocado past a few years old - they get too big to come in over summer, and I don't have a conservatory or greenhouse.

I have also tried starfruit, lychee, mango and papaya from seeds. Basically, if there's some tropicsl fruit in my house, i've probably tried to grow the seed at some point.

The worst that happens is that they are delayed going into the compost bin. It's exciting when they do germinate, though.

There are a couple of books on growing things from pips, but I can't get at them right now to check the authors.

But here's my avocado, about 18 months old, I think. (With added chilli and volunteer snapdragon.)

Yes it got to about 5-6 ft and too big for the house , then as soon as I put it outside it caught the frost

Mayflower282 · 16/11/2025 20:24

If you want it to produce avocados you have to splice it with another and graft it together.

Bagamama · 16/11/2025 20:29

Yes, a few. One got to 7ft in the sunny garden. I'm in the south.
I've got a couple coming up in the flower bed where I chucked the stones out.

MyThreeWords · 16/11/2025 20:30

I've grown them a few times - or rather, as with a PP, they have grown themselves in my compost bin and then I have transferred them to a pot. They are the vilest plants, and I speak as a houseplant addict.

If you live in a warm urban spot in the south so that they can go outside, there might be some point to them. Otherwise, give yourself the fun of germinating them but then send them back to the compost heap where they belong.

Gettingbysomehow · 16/11/2025 20:32

Yes I grew a big one from a supermarket avocado but left it outside too late and the frost killed it. Its 100% frost intolerant.
Other avocado's didn't grow at all.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 16/11/2025 20:35

I’ve grown them, the fun bit is getting the seed to sprout the actual plant isn’t very exciting and fussy to keep alive.

Try growing dragonfruit!

Try growing dragonfruit!

I really should 😂

ErrolTheDragon · 16/11/2025 23:35

I grew my avocados in water one of those hyacinth vase things - they were big stones.

I did. I got little cacti - sadly they died - I think I overwatered them.
