there's a worm at the bottom of my garden

well, a kilogram of them, to be precise. And they're more at the back door, rather than at the bottom of the garden (not that there's much difference). Have had great fun this afternoon setting up my wormery - got it for Christmas and worms arrived in the post today. Me and dds were up to our elbows in "worm soup". It's ok - that's soup for the worms not made of worms. It was coconut fibre and water, but lots of fun and very messy. Had to ask the plumber (they do have some uses)to empty the bag of worms in as couldn't bring myself to do it. Thankfully he had one himself (a wormery) so didn't think I was a total loon.

Did it work, scalty? We have the most horrendous clay soil, and I did think of getting the worms in...

It sounds like it's worth a try. We did try mixing in soil improver, but tbh the soil is so sticky and heavy it was nigh on impossible to dig it in very deeply at all. I was kind of hoping I could let the worms do the hard bit! Where do you buy worms from?

I must try the slug pellets. I bought some organic ones from a garden centre, which were completely ineffective - the slugs hopped over it and devoured my seedlings

LOL!! The slug nematode things sound fab, and the site has lots of other lovely things that I'll try. I really fancy growing some fruit this year, although I'm not sure if I should get the slug problem sorted out first. Why do you use cat food for slugs?

paolosgirl - my worms came from wigglywigglers.com - another great site. The nemotodes sound good - I might give them a go

We have loads of slugs - I'm always standing on them in my bare feet in the kitchen in the early mornings. They ate all my lovely herbs last year. I haven't the heart to kill or even hurt them though. My gran says put salt around this years' herbs and that will stop them without hurting them. Does anyone know if this will work?

You want grit and humous (sp?) as well as worms for clay.
