Hello

First time trying chilli plants. Got 2 off this wee guy.

Will it come back next year or is it into the garden waste bin with him?

Thanks

No it’s not dead. And from what I know, chilli’s and peppers come back every year with care. If you have a cool spot inside to over winter then you can cut back quite hard and then just give it tiny sips of water until spring. I’m sure there is a better explanation online, but I know several peer on my allotment keep them over winter and get a bumper crop every year

You could try keeping it on your kitchen windowsill over winter to see what happens. It will die if left outside.

I agree with @GreenGodiva, it should be fine, but your kitchen will probably be much too warm. Do you have an unheated porch or similar? I'd even keep it in the garage without light as it won't need any till it starts into growth again.

Thanks! Glad I checked before chucking!

I read online that a south facing windowsill would be best for overwintering - sounds like that's completely wrong then - too hot/sunny?!

I could put him in the shed? I don't have a greenhouse or an unheated porch.

I've got one and it looks like all the leaves are about to drop off. I guess yours is just at the next stage. They're meant to come back in summer I think?

Thanks. He doesn't take up much space so I'm happy to give him a reprieve from the garden waste bin and just see how he fares.

Next year, I'm going to buy multiples of things so I can do scientific experiments re what care works best. In fact i've already started this year - I really like heather so I've bought 1 for the front garden and 1 for the back and we shall see which does better!

Still alive, not that easy to overwinter I find - I have a success rate of about 1 in 4 plants.

That compost looks like it's run out of energy though. I'd put it in a slightly bigger pot and add compost to the sides and a bit on top.

It’s definitely not dead! I don’t grow chilli plants but a friend over-winters them in a greenhouse, so it’s clearly worth giving it a try.
