How are the trees near you looking?

Are they still green the leaves or have they mostly dropped off or brown
Mine are a bit of both when it comes to colour.

Mostly still green leaves, some red and yellow. But the sad thing is the number of really huge old trees whose trunks have snapped. Five at least in my local park. People say its been too dry, but it is shocking, as it hadn't even been windy when some of them snapped.

Edit to add: it's been a mast year here too. We get pelted with a hail of acorns at the slightest breeze. Apparently it's a sign the trees are stressed.

Some still bright green, some with bright red or yellow leaves, some gone brown and losing them, some bald. I think they are a bit confused this year.

I was on Hampstead Heath this morning and there was a glorious variation of colours - yellow, orange, russet, golden, brown and a few still green. On my drive to work I keep getting distracted by the beautiful autumnal hues.

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 16/10/2025 19:14

The last couple of days they've been beautiful - all orange and red and falling leaves everywhere.

I live in a valley in North Yorkshire and the trees are stunning, yellows orange red, beautiful just beautiful

All the same species?

Same! In North Yorkshire also and the trees are beautiful here. A mix of everything including a bit of green still. My Dahlias still have unopened buds but crispy leaves 🍂

Greenwich park, glorious variation of colour. So beautiful

Gorgeous colours here - not much green left, but lots of scarlet, bronze, copper and umber.

Nope. As well all the trees in the surrounding area and the ones I pass on my commute, I have a lot of bonsai trees of many species and they are all at different stages of autumnal shut-down.

RedwallMattimeo · 17/10/2025 18:43

They have suddenly turned this week where we live and are spectacular.

Ah yes I meant are you noticing more within-species variation than usual? There's always loads of between species variation - it always surprises me how much! Bonsai sound amazing, did you do them yourself?

I have a variety of Japanese maples which are (from what I'm looking at out of the window right now) that are showing either bright green, amazing reds, brown with leaves dropping, and completely bare. They are all relatively close together in the garden.

One hawthorn has lost nearly all its leaves already, the other is still mainly green.

The rest of them seem to be following each other's lead species-wise.

Re bonsai, yes a lot of them are ones I've created myself, or are in progress (there's no such thing as a finished bonsai), bought as trees/shrubs as raw material or in training, or ones that had been neglected by their previous owners who sold them for peanuts and I'm bringing them round. Don't ask me how many I have, because I don't actually know!

We had a lot of glorious colour near us too! We need to plant a tree in spring )to replace a dead one we removed last year) and I’m trying to find one with lovely autumn colour as well.

Lots of Virginia creeper locally, and some cherries, beeches and maples. Next door has a spindle tree. I’d love a dogwood but don’t really have a location for it at the minute.

Nice topic! Our trees are looking quite lively this season — I’ve noticed one of our smaller garden trees is finally getting the leaf coverage I hoped for, though we’re still pulling out some stray grass and weeds around its base to keep the roots happy.

If anyone else is doing a bit of garden planning this year, I came across a handy tool called Grow a Garden Calculator that helps work out spacing, companion planting and how much area to dedicate. It’s been quite useful for me when thinking about how the trees and surrounding planting will interact.
