So I’m an easy sell as I’ve just had the David Austin bare root roses leaflet sent and am now imagining a huge tumble of roses in ooh, about five tears time…

I’ve lived in a house with a Malvern Hills in the garden which was spectacular, and I want something as scented as possible, what are your favourites??

Paul’s Himalayan Musk is a beauty, in the right spot, with a wonderful fragrance. I also like Rambling Rector- although this is not particularly scented.

Ooh the right spot - do you mean sunny?

Alberic barbier is a very reliable creamy white rambler which repeat flowers and has a beautiful scent.
I have grown it in two different homes over my catios.
Never disappoints and unlike many of the older roses is fairly disease resistant.

I have a deep pink China rose growing through high bushes. It’s so beautiful and abundant every year through the summer.

I've got a couple of Generous Gardeners going in this autumn to cover a big barn. I do love a Kiftsgate -but got scared off after stories of people planting them and coming back to find they'd eaten the house when their backs were turned....

I’m in a wet part of the country not great for roses in my view. But Zepherine Drouhin seems to do well and has no thorns -handy if near a path.

Yes. I have grown it in partial shade and this limited the size. I also had one in full sun growing through an old tree that also has a wisteria up it. In the sun it grew to be a monster! It doesn’t flower for long and, sadly, a heavy rain shower will knock all the petals off, but it is one to consider- I would say.

Claire Austen have also done well for me, but I found they needed a lot of water and sun to really produce beautiful blooms, so are more care intensive than Paul’s and a Rector. This wouldn’t put me off, though. I just love roses!

Souvenir du dr jamain. Ravishing colour and scent. Undeniably fussy, i
like to think the rose in the little prince was one of these.

How big are Generous Gardener flowers? I’m trying to get my husband on side with this one, but he’s worried that the flowers will be huge! The DA website is a bit vague.

Ooh this is tricky. I really like Phyllis Bide for a rambler, but its not really scented. Generous gardener smells lovely, but the petals drop really fast compared to my other David Austins. I had The Pilgrim at my last house and that was fab on all fronts.

Completely normal size in my garden, definitely same size as Olivia Rose Austin, which I have next to GG.

Super thanks. I have an Olivia Rose Austin for comparison.

I still need to decide on a clematis or other climber to go with it…

Wedding Day is glorious. Also Dorothy Perkins, but that's not got much scent.

JennyShaw · 03/10/2025 15:35

You can grow Gertrude Jekyll as a climber.

Mmmkaay · 03/10/2025 17:31

My vote is for Lady of the Lake - unfussy, easy to grow, relatively small blooms which are peachy and creamy and just sublime, smells fabulous and for some reason never seems to get the recognition it deserves! Don't go for Mme Alfred Carriere unless you've got a massive space and don't mind wrestling with it. Mine is insane (although it does smell amazing).

McSock · 03/10/2025 17:50

New Dawn is a lovely rambler.

Seaitoverthere · 03/10/2025 18:03

I like Lady of the Lake. Had it on my old house and have planted it in new garden. It is a repeat rambler and I have had flowers well into December before on a south facing wall.

Lady of the Lake is my absolute favourite. I love the yellow centre and how they start pinker. Because they're open single flowers they're wonderful for pollinators too. Here in my garden in June.

@Seaitoverthere I've planted it in two of my gardens too.

Beachtastic · 03/10/2025 18:51

My favourite is Wollerton Old Hall. It's beautiful, fragrant, and does all right in shady areas.

I was going to say Madame Alfred Carriere because she has just been so rewarding, but I put her in a north facing aspect with lots of shade from trees and she was modest in growth but the flowers simply splendid. Then all the neighbouring trees came down and she was bathed in all that lovely southern sun...

I do need to cut her back hard soon but there's still flowers from the second flush now. The first flush in May is staggering, the air around is filled with traditional rose scent (Guinee helps with that too) and the blooms are beautiful: supposedly white, but all with a varying hints of shell pink.

If you have space, she's highly recommended. I also have Guinee but he's a bit more fussy but with deep blood red blooms, a thing of glory too, especially when he merges in with Mme Alfred.

Oh god!!!!! I need another climbing rose like a hole in the head. I shouldn't have read those posts...

EBearhug · 08/10/2025 21:18

Another vote for Paul's Himalayan Musk.

HomeCountyHome · 08/10/2025 21:24

I was going to say A Shropshire Lad, which is glorious, but I see David Austin have retired it. Along with Munstead Wood ☹️

WhereAreWeNow · 08/10/2025 21:36

I've got a beautiful Lady of the Lake. I haven't trained it properly through so it's growing all over the place.
