Hyacinth vases plus bulb

Went to the garden centre today. On a whim I bought a hyacinth vase (the ones where you can see their roots growing) plus a bulb each for my kids.
Do I just fill the vase with water and pop the bulb in the top? I have. Vague recollection of my dad keeping hyacinths in the loft so it was dark and bringing them out for Christmas.
I don’t especially care about them flowering at Christmas but I would like them to actually grow!

I'm not sure but I think you have to chill the bulbs to encourage them to grow (called forcing) and I think you'd have to store them in the fridge for it to be cold enough, unless they're a prepared sort? Do they say they're prepared ready for Christmas forcing? If not I think the period you have to chill them for it quite long (i.e. weeks).

If you search "forcing hyacinths for Christmas" I think you'll get the information you need, or hopefully someone else with more knowledge than me will be along!

Google says:
To grow hyacinths in water for Christmas, start with a special bulb vase or glass container and place a prepared hyacinth bulb on top, ensuring it doesn't touch the water.

Fill the container with water to the bottom of the bulb.

Store it in a cool, dark place for about 6-10 weeks to promote root growth.

Once roots are established and a shoot emerges, move the vase to a well-lit and slightly warmer spot, rotating it daily, to encourage the flower bud to develop and bloom by Christmas.

They don’t say. They are in a bag that says tulips but they were definitely hyacinths as there was a big tub of them and I chose a pink one and a white one.

Thanks! I’ll put them in the garage. I was hoping it wouldn’t be complicated, never mind.
